disaffiliating?
by: curious pnmI came across a blog by an alpha phi today where she talked about her sorority experience, and while it had lots of good info in it (I appreciated hearing from an active's perspective) she said that her big disaffiliated, and then she got "adopted" into another family in her sorority, and then that big disaffiliated pretty soon after but that it wasn't a big deal since it's common. Is that true? how common is it for girls to disaffiliate from their sororities? I've never had sisters before and that's a big reason why I want to go through recruitment so I don't want to join and then have my bigs disaffiliate. Sorry if that's dumb to worry about it just made me nervous!

It definitely depends on the chapter, but at GW disaffiliation in general is fairly common. Certain chapters definitely have higher rates of disaffiliation, but the Greek life culture in general at GW includes a lot of disaffiliation both in sororities and frats. That being said, I think you should still go through recruitment! Disaffiliating doesn't mean someone won't still be your friend, plus your big won't be your only lifeline in the chapter. Don't let some experiences keep you from trying it out!

It's true that disaffiliation is not at all uncommon at GW, and this blog proves that it happens regardless of chapter "rank" or reason. Plenty of girls leave their chapters because they're unhappy, can't afford it, transfer, want to focus on grades, or don't have time with a new job. However, we often criticize those chapters who fill the vacancies left by these women through COB, but we ALL have women drop for any number of reasons, so we should instead not only sympathize, but be happy that we're continuing to grow our greek community.
