by:

How do you think secound semester will change rush? Will more or less girls rush/ will the types of girls who rush be different?!?!

it will go one of two ways. either more girls will come out to recruitment because they realized that being in a sorority is not all the movies make it out to be, or fewer girls go through because they already made their friends and don't need another obligation. on the one hand, GW does have a strong turn out every year for upperclassmen in recruitment, which suggests that girls who don't go through as a freshman realize that greek life is more than just the stereotypes and they want to be a part of something they feel would be beneficial. on the other hand, GW also has a low retention rate, lots of chapter closures in recent history, and last year's recruitment had a smaller turnout than years before.

It can also change the way that sororities are viewed by PNMs. it's pretty easy to keep up a facade of sisterhood during the first few weeks, but PNMs will see sorority members in their classes, in their student orgs, and out at parties. This means they either get bombarded with dirty rushing through sanctioned interactions, or they realize that the stereotypes of "xyz is the hottest" or "abc is only for awkward rejects" aren't true, because they've met more girls in more chapters. Again, could go either way.

Agree however GW historically has always had significantly lower turn out for rush during presidential election years (weird but accurate) so that fact alone may not be as significant as it seems

I think the freshman are going to go through dead set on one chapter and then be really sad when they get dropped.

That happens every year. The best thing any PNM can do is to go in with an open mind, because if you’re set on 1 chapter out of 11, your odds aren’t great, and you could miss out on a wonderful sisterhood.

I'd be interested in seeing how it changes in terms of numbers. Will more PNMs rush? Will more PNMs sign the MRABA? Will quota be lower because we're back up to 11 chapters? Will Theta's PC be significantly larger than the other chapters through QAs to try to get up to total? What does this mean for Pike? Deferred recruitment changes a lot of things.

MRABA?

it stands for "membership recruitment acceptance binding agreement". it's the form PNMs sign after pref ranking their sororities, and it's also a contract saying they are bound to whatever bid they receive for one year.

Will other sororities make bigger cuts to help out theta?

Quota will go down because of Theta, therefore the pledge classes should be smaller than last year's

While registration isn't closed yet, I have heard that registration for PNMs is down this year. Given that total is 118 and Theta is still quite below that, and how quota is calculated, I presume they will be making up for the difference somehow, whether it be through snap bids or COB throughout the spring. Being so much smaller is understandable before having a formal recruitment, but if they continue being 20+ below total, I doubt their nationals will be too pleased.

I doubt their sisters will be too pleased, either. The purpose of taking quota is not only to ensure the continuation of your organization, but it also helps manage dues. For my chapter, and I know a few other chapters at GW, our president told us at the beginning of fall semester that dues would be a little bit higher because we didn't have a PC to offset the cost. New members also usually pay higher fees before they're initiated. If Theta wants to continue to grow and maybe one day get a house, they need to get up to total. Chapter have been shut down by their nationals for failing to reach total for too many years.

You guys are acting like it’s the end of the world that Theta isn’t at total after being around for less than a year and not even doing a formal Recruitment yet. You can’t make any assumptions about the implications of their numbers until they go through formal. As for the number of PNMs currently signed up, it might be low right now but most girls register in the last week before recruitment starts.

I don't think anyone's freaking out about Theta or recruitment in general. I think it's just natural speculation, because we're in pretty unchartered territory right now. PNMs are all over this site because they have no idea what to expect, and actives are understandably curious too, since deferred recruitment and a new colony after only recently having a chapter get kicked off are both considerations. No one is on here saying "Theta sucks I hope they fail," but rather questioning how all of this will work, since there's no precedent.

according to Panhel, there are only 280 PNMs signed up for recruitment right now. I know there's usually a big push right before recruitment starts, but as it stands if every PNM were to complete the process, quota would be 25, and we all know not every PNM completes the process. That's like half of last year, and last year was a low year. This whole deferred recruitment thing might have been a really bad idea...
