greeklife
by: GuestHow important is being greek at GWU. I go to another school and my chapter isn't here. Just wondering if it makes too much of a difference.

For underclassmen I'd say it's the biggest factor in social life, followed pretty quickly by certain club sports. The older you get the less it matters as people start going to bars more but people get pretty stuck in their groups formed from underclassmen so especially if you're a dude I think being a part of Greek life is a huge plus, but not 100% necessary especially if you're an upperclassmen.

I definitely think it helps to be greek, but overall you will only have a social life if you get involved. GW is a very active campus, so if you are a guy and you don't have a chapter here, try rushing a professional frat, or joining a few clubs. I know a guy who came to GW, transferred to a different school and rushed there, then transferred back to GW and rushed, got a bid, that fraternity got kicked off campus, then he rushed a business frat. Just getting involved is the main thing.

You can def still have friends & a social life without being in greek life. I know loads of people who are and aren't. Greek life is fairly small at gw and getting smaller each year, it just feels like everyone's in it bc you see people wearing letters. GW's known for being super anti-greek, the admin will sanction & put houses on probation for no reason. Basically they're always looking for reasons to kick chapters off. imo i'd go to some rush events and just talk to people, even if its not for you you might have a good time anyway. worth a shot imo. i def wouldn't say you need to be in greek life to have friends, whether or not you decide to do it should be based on if greek life is right for you, not bc you want a friend group (greek life can give u friends but you can still have a friend group wo/ greek life).
