alpha phi question

by:

Someone told me Alpha Phi isn't letting all of their sisters do recruitment. What does that mean? Are those sisters Pi Rho Chis instead? Why wouldn't you let all of the sisters do recruitment?

I have no idea what that would mean, but all chapters have to give some sisters up to be pi rho chis and some sisters are enlisted to do numbers and matching, so no chapter has all their sisters recruit. I'd love to know what that means and where you heard it

I don't know what this means either! That's why I asked here. Is there somewhere else I could ask instead? I'm new to the whole Greek life thing. I just heard a girl on the vex say, "alpha phi doesn't even let all their girls recruit, they get rid of the duds"

It's a panhel rule that each chapter has to give a certain number of members to be pi rho chis so that there are enough for all the PNMs. There's also usually (likely varies by chapter) a separate room where sisters look over PNM resumes and comments from sisters to "match" PNMs with actives so they have stuff in common. They also usually evaluate the PNMs by whatever scoring system the chapter uses.

Let's not try to spread rumors two days before recruitment, people. I'll break it down for you this way:

On a national level, it's common for chapters to ask girls not to participate in recruitment for a few reasons. Some actives are asked to help match girls, some are off doing "research" ie. stalking PNMs on social media to see how they present themselves, and others are asked to stay in the kitchen and not be seen by PNMs. Those are usually the sisters the actives are embarrassed by, whether it be for their reputation, looks, or anything that could look bad to the PNM.

When we're talking about GW, let's remember that this is not a big state or southern school where recruitment is intense. We don't have giant mansions where we hide actives we're embarrassed by or anything like that. Many of the chapters at GW actually have national rules where it's a requirement that every member of the chapter participate in recruitment. Lots of actives at GW try to find ways to get out of recruitment because some just don't like doing it. Other chapters have to ask actives to come in for half days of recruitment because the rooms in Marvin Center can get too crowded and reach capacity which is never a fun time (it gets too hot, there isn't space to move, it gets too loud...you get it).

With recruitment starting Friday, let's stay away from starting rumors about specific chapters. At this point it's an obvious move to try to make other chapters look bad.

Its not just Alpha Phi. Some sororities just don't let certain girls talk to PNM's.

Hey so being part of a sorority, I know that we cannot always have all our girls in recruitment especially because the Marvin Center is so small. The rooms assigned to sororities have a maximum capacity and if we exceed this capacity, it's apparently a fire hazard. So while all girls may not participate at once, most girls will be participating in recruitment (except if they're Pi Rho Chis). As for Alpha Phi, it may just be the case for them as well.
