what can we all do together to grow our greek scene?

by:

I'm looking at other schools I'm realizing that we have a really small Greek scene. Granted, it's not like Waterloo or UOIT small, but we're dwarfed by the schools in Ottawa, Alberta, and UBC is huge too. It's ridiculous if just one Greek organization decides to balloon up to 200 members to compete with other schools/American schools, so this is something we've got to all do together. So given this, what are our best options? Should we encourage more fraternities and sororities, or should we all agree to grow, or what other options do we have (that are better)? The more the merrier, and it would be great to see this school have 10% of it students go Greek by the next decade.

I honestly kinda like having smaller chapters than those in the US because it gives you a chance to get to know almost everyone in chapter. However, I definitely think we need one or two more sororities here, which is definitely a possibility in the next few years as there have been talks about establishing another one. There's already a bunch of frats so I don't think we need new ones.

A lot of people join because of word-of-mouth so if we get more sororities and promote our experiences in the greek scene as much as possible there's a good chance our community could grow even more.

I agree that it is nice getting to know most of the chapter, but I feel like with the size of our Greek orgs right now, we're not really able to have parties that put Western on the map. Like the UC Boulder Kappa Sigma has their beachpalooza, Texas's SAE has their jungle party, but we don't really have anything all that impressive (I know there's other factors holding us back like none of the fraternities/sororities having big financial backings from alumni & London city not playing nice with us). If we grow ourselves out then we can all quickly grow out our alumni bases and be able to do bigger and better things.

I'm fairly new to the Greek scene here, how much would you say we have been growing by in the last few years?

An LXA guy mentioned the chapter has gone from 30ish to 80ish(?) brothers in the past few years and sororities have been growing too so I feel like in a couple more years we could have some 100+ chapters! Panhellenic is a lot more involved on social media and committed to attracting lots of PNMs which I’m sure will help. Really, every Greek encouraging their friends to rush is our best bet right now since western is a huge school already

Also, western Greek life is a lot better here than at Ottawa or Alberta no matter what numbers say- it’s more comparable to my friends in the states experiences just smaller scaled but we still have a very involved attractive and hard partying population

keep in mind other schools in Canada like UBC and uOttawa have literally like double the amount of students so naturally their greek scenes are bigger.

Oh, I did not know that^ I assumed our 35k students was about on par with everyone else, that's good to know. What would you say is the average number of people in each fraternity and each sorority? 60ish for fraternities and 110 for sororities?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist in our school, but we do not have a fraternity registry/rush info program at our school like they do in the states/what the PHC does for sorority rushing here right? Fellow fraternity bros, I think we should investigate creating one so that we can increase incoming first year interest by giving them a resource to compare all of us (and know where they're supposed to rush) so as to encourage them to rush us.
