why are sororities calling and emailing me?

by:

I won't name names but I have gotten several calls and emails from two different sororities in the last few days. I thought that was dirty rushing?

I'm not returning the calls because I'm not interested in either house.

Shouldn't somebody stop this?

You should report them ASAP.

I'm afraid it may hurt my chances at the house I really want.

If you are really worried, do it on bid day morning. They'll be punished in a different way, like losing social privileges.

Plus, you said it yourself: shouldn't somebody stop this?

Nobody can stop it unless you help them. They need proof.

I think an email from the sorority membership committee would be proof enough, right? I think even one person was an alumni member in a second email. They mention that only select girls were being contacted. They also stated that I wasn't officially being rushed and this was just a friendly communication meant to offer me help with getting accustomed to SC and if I had any questions about the rush process they would be available to help.

I posted this on another thread, but you need to see this too...

So I'm on leadership for Panhellenic and actually check out this site just check for things like this. Getting emailed by chapters is absolutely 100% against the rules, even if they are just saying they want to help answer questions- that is what we are here for. The fact that you were emailed by more than one sorority is really concerning, because I am sure you are not the only one they emailed. Please email out panhellenic president (email is on the website) and let her know, if possible include the emails from the sororities. Doing so will not get you in trouble by any means, and it will not affect your recruitment. If you don't email us and we find out later on (i.e. during recruitment), the repercussions could be more serious... I know last year there were a few girls who were sent messages/emails that got to one of the final rounds then got dropped by the sorority, which is when they told panhellenic (aka too late for PHC to do anything about it to help the girl). I would hate to see you in the same situation, and it is super important to stop these kind of things if possible.

I didn't do anything to cause me to get these contacts from these two houses. I feel like I am now being threatened if I don't tell. Either way I lose and that just isn't fair. I want to stay completely anonymous. There should be a system where I can report something and not be threatened if I don't tell.

Just so you know, one of the emails says USC Greek Life gave the sorority my contact information and it was okay to for them to contact me as it wasn't an official rush contact. If true, why is USC giving out my contact information to anyone?

Create an anonymous gmail account. Then take the letters and photocopy them. Black out your name on all photocopies. Then scan those photocopies that have your name and info blacked out and email them to the Panhellenic President using your anonymous gmail account.

To whomever is claiming to be a representative of Sorority leadership (PHC):

Many who have read your post find it to be threatening the victim in this case. If she doesn't tell this Panhellenic President, "the repercussions could be more serious". What exactly does that mean and what gives you right to threaten the person(s) who did nothing wrong? Did USC Greek Life give out contact information on girls who are considering rush? If they did, somebody needs to fired and maybe you need a new Panhellenic President.

I find this entire situation appalling and expected much better from USC and the sorority system in general.

What if someone just printed fake emails to sabotage another house? Dirty rushing is serious. It could cut their pledge class in half and would be incredibly easy to fake an email in under 2 minutes. Panhellenic, you need to be careful to make sure your proof is real proof if it's anonymous.

Panhellenic didn't threaten the victim. She was saying it could be more serious to the house. Jeezus.

All the girl has to do is do that whole anonymous email and blackout thing. And by the way, they can't fake who it's coming from. Panhellenic can check that email address and then if necessary, speak with the person, to see if it's legit.

I read a clear threat to the victim if she waits until after rush to disclose the emails. What else could this PHC person be trying to say?

So this person who claims to represent PHC needs to clarify what she meant or there will be no cooperation from us.

Further, how did these sororities get contact information and apparently review facebook pages as they mentioned in one of the emails?

even if it's reported it's not going to stop anything. Unless you forward the email you can't prove it because anything can be photo edited to make it seem like it was from a certain address. Also punishment for these things is minimal.
