legacy
by: PNMHow much do the USC sororities take legacy into account when making a decision? In addition, how important are rec letters?

@well: You said "Kappa and DG and Theta all follow this rule with incredible strictness." This is laughable. One of the girls in my sorority had a USC Kappa mom. So, a straight, very direct legacy. And she was pretty, smart and fun.... but apparently not enough so for Kappa. Kappa's loss, our gain!!!

Trying to give actual advice here. Think of being a legacy and having letters of Rec at USC as having extra credit. It can help, but it won't give you the A all by itself. Being a legacy is promised to get you through convo days and if you make it to pref at most houses, you should get a bid according to nationals. Letters of rec can get your foot in the door, but unless it's a HUGE name that wrote it, will likely only really get you through convo days. The most important thing is to present yourself well and for the house to feel like you'd be a good fit and represent them well. If you are a legacy, make sure to declare it on your application and try to register it with nationals. Otherwise the house will not know and can drop you after convo days or any day as mentioned above. Good luck and have fun!

Remember that "legacy" for most houses only means sisters, mothers, or grandmothers, and I'm not even sure if all houses count grandmothers. Your aunts and cousins and great-great-step-aunts do not count. As for rec letters, the best ones are from current sisters of the USC chapter, recent graduates (recent enough that some of us still remember her), or big-name alums. But this isn't the SEC; rec letters might help a bit but if you don't have them it doesn't really matter.

Being a legacy helps to get you through the first round at most houses. You need to declare it on your forms and through nationals though or else they will have no idea. Nationals should notify them and your relation should receive a confirmation of receiving the legacy declaration. Houses that I know legacies are Theta, DG, AXO, Gamma Phi, Kappa and APhi.
