How important are they for sorority rush? I don't know many sorority alums and am afraid a lack of recs will hurt my chances

They vary by house, it seems as though top houses value them a lot more than middle and bottom houses. I know people in DG and APhi who said that they really help, and someone in ADPi who said they don't matter.
