greek life at usc

by:

All the posts on this site about actual greek life focus on 'ranking' the frats and sororitys. Can someone please explain what it is actually like to be in one? What kind of events do you attend? How is it different from not being in one? Is there hazing involved, or is that just a myth? Is there anything your particular sorority or fraternity does that sets it apart? Rankings seem juvenile, but maybe it's just me.

It is a valid point that greek life exists in a capacity aside from being ranked from top to bottom. Each house is unique and each member's experience is different. That said, you would be hard pressed to get people to open up much about greek life on this site as they are technically 'secret societies'.

For me, the biggest difference from being in a house vs not being in one was when I joined I instantly got a ton of acquaintances, even if I didn’t get a ton of close friends. Suddenly you know over a hundred people and your social circle just completely expands, but you also hang out with your old friends less. The other biggest difference was I always had something to do every weekend/night and had a ton of stuff to do in my social life compared to before. Lastly I instantly felt way cooler than GDI plebs who dared to be in the same room as me, and I’d regularly hawk a loogie and let it rip in their face.

I do agree with you it’s hard to get an idea of what’s really happening with all the constant rankings. Some high school girls never grow up and they’re obsessed with keeping their status and in fear they will lose it by talking to or associating with a guy or girl not in a top house. Spend a lot of energy judging other people by their looks and money. The sorority girls also judge the fraternities and threaten them with bad rankings & reviews if they don’t like their party or if they don’t think the pledges are cute enough and will say they are declining as they consume all the refreshments provided by the frat boys.
However, in spite of the immature girls, belonging to a sorority or fraternity does provide you with instant friends and acquaintances. A social group & a place to go -a house to belong too. There’s a house for everyone and you just have to go where you feel at home and with the people you have the most in common with -although not perfect, Greek life adds a lot of positives to your college experience especially at a big school like USC.
