Is it true that you need to know people in a fraternity if you want to get in? I read that online.. I don't know anyone at ubc but I really wanna join.

if you have no connections it's next to impossible to get in to a top tier fraternity or the higher middle tiers. im sure you'll be fine for psi u/ksig/adphi, etc though

If you are not from BC or not well connected, you should expect to get dropped from top houses early on. If you did not get recs, don't know any actives, are socially awkward or can't put yourself together, you are not likely to get a bid from any good frat.

For sororities most people who rush don't know anyone nor do they have rec letters. Maybe it's different for frats?? I never knew they were so selective

frats don't need recs. of course you need to know people, but that happens during rush

^ false. half the guys we rushed the brothers didn't know and yes i rush for a 'top tier' frat. obviously having connections makes it easier but if you go out and make a good impression, you'll be remembered. they have a certain quota to meet. i'm sure no frat has 40 pledges all of whom had a connection.

Lol, no. Knowing people helps but in the first few weeks of school frats will be tabling/having rush events etc. for you to go out and meet people. As long as you're fun and outgoing, and they think your values align, you should be good. This isn't the Southern U.S., it's not highly competitive to get into a frat here and anyone who tells themselves otherwise is delusional and trying to make themselves feel better. If we're being real, Greek life at UBC is not the highest pinnacle of aspiration for most of the student body. No one sees you any better if you're in a frat/sorority (although they might judge you a little negatively) and there are really sick ways to party (ski and board for example) with being in the greek system, and SO many other ways to get involved with leadership, volunteering etc. So, if it's for you it's for you but if it's not don't sweat it. It's a great experience but not the only experience.
