by: lillllllyyIm interested in rushing for a sorority in September when I come to UBC my long term bf is going to school in Toronto. He doesn't want me to rush because he says the greek system is toxic and no matter how solid we are it will cause problems. Can someone please give me some advice about this? I have heard of a lot of couples breaking up because of this so I kind of agree but am super excited about rushing. Just some thoughts and anyone who has been through this...........

The Greek system is only toxic so long as the incoming rushers continue to endorse old toxic ideas. This sounds stupid but hear me out. The Greek system could be a place where people rush sororities based on where they feel most comfortable, but instead it’s a place where girls rush for what they think is the best sorority and go for popularity. This is how all the problems start. This mindset among the rushers creates competitions, the sorority system feels less united, and girls end up dropping because they find out that they actually have nothing in common with the girls in they’re sorority. In order to break this pattern rushing needs to be a more genuine experience. When you rush, don’t think about which sorority has the prettiest girls, or who’s the most popular, because a lot of the time the popular sororities have the most bullying and the highest drop rates. Come in with An open mind, don’t avoid any sororities, and instead truly pick the sorority when you make the most connections. Then you’ll have a positive experience and avoid the toxicity. Not only will this be good for yourself and your own mental health and experience, but this individual action in the long run will help rushing in general be a more genuine experience for everyone where no one feels pressured to join a certain strat or look a certain way.

^ as a girl who almost joined a top tier strat and ended up joining a middle tier. Leave these girls alone. The top tier strats are breeding grounds for bullying and racism. I’m so glad as a POC that I didn’t go for something like GPHI, KKG, or ADPI. The culture there is so toxic. I’ve never felt more held than how I’ve felt at AGD, APHI, AOII, and THETA. Please go where you feel most safe 💗
