You're honestly not going to find very many good answers on here to a question like that since it is so broad but I'll try and do my best to give you something to go on.
Greek life is different at every university you go to but a large trend that can be found is in schools that place extremely high emphasis on grades versus the overall university experience, such as Harvard, the Greek communities are typically smaller and the vice versa. Despite this, Greek life is often given a general stereotype of being big, outlandish and "American". Because Canadian Greek life doesn't exactly fit into that "American" stereotype (simply by definition) we are often hated on.
Greek life is fulfilling wherever you go and is a community filled with future and current leaders. Every single Greek system is different but in a school like UBC, which is consistently ranked in the top 40 on a global scale, students are very focused on academics and that makes us slightly smaller in comparison to those who perpetuate the Greek stereotypes in the south.
Simply because we are different and Canadian doesn't make us any less than the southern Greeks or any less established (many fraternities and sororities were establish in the early 1920's at UBC).
