greek life likes the locals

by: wtf

Yeah ubc is pretty international, but greek life is so local. Everyone is from bc. Heck, the past sig sweethearts went to the same high school. I haven't really ever met an int girl from a top 4 srat. Why is it like this at ubc like is this a cultural thing or smth

It used to be a lot more international 2-3 years ago. I remember almost everyone I met in the Greek system being from outside of BC. For the past 2 years though, recruitment numbers have been pretty low. The girls who have been signing up are usually girls who were convinced to sign up by girls they’re already friends with (i.e. they went to the same high school or are from the same hometown). There’s less people who voluntarily sign up for recruitment now than in the past.

That’s actually really true. Even the girls OP is posting about, the old adpi sweetheart was the one who got the current gphi sweetheart to sign up for recruitment. I think greek life just has less appeal now than before.

It’s because of all these restrictions, Greek life looses its purpose. At the end of the day we’re all college kids looking to have a good time, with events like ACF and exchanges being cancelled, being in a sorority/fraternity looses its appeal. Why pay so much to be in an organization when you can have regular parties

I alumed but I’m still (kinda) involved in Greek life. I kid you not, in 2016 everything was so lit. Sororities obv have always had rankings but at that time, frats didn’t have rankings. Instead every one just had a different vibe and they were all so much fun to party at. Exchanges were basically parties back then. Really miss those fun days. I feel bad for the younger crowd who’ll never experience it :(

I think maybe this varies chapter to chapter? My top 4 has at least 30% international students, and I know of some with more and definitely some with way less. I generally find sig to be more locals, and maybe that’s just correlation with sweethearts. Some frats like k sig have a lot of international students, but some also have a lot of B.C. guys. Probably based on friendships and connections from before ubc?
