Racial Discrimination in Fraternities

by: owjrhje

With everything going on, I just want to give my two cents here. We, as the Greek system are discriminatory against BIPOC. It starts from rush where certain fraternities (won’t take names) look for people who fit in their cookie cutter machine. Again, it comes down to preference but the way we portray this preference is extremely hurtful.

I was born and raised in a completely different culture, and in a different community. While rushing, I was treated differently than my white counterparts, I thought there was something wrong with me throughout rush.

I understand that it comes down to preference, but in my opinion, color should never be a preference to any organization. At ubc, and in the Greek system, we follow a rhetoric of if a person was raised in some country with different values, they’re “not up to par”.

There’s a trend here around disagreeing with the problems in the Greek system around racial bias, but it’s time we accept it and do something about it.

This may be true in certain frats, but I would say there are some (ex k sig) that are majority not white, and a lot of international students. Not to hype up k sig. just saying there’s pretty good representation in some houses.
