sick and tired of greek system

I am so, so tired of being in a sorority.
Unless you’re a first year with no friends or any kind of life outside of your academics, it’s so soul sucking and tiring. Exchanges every week? Points we have to gain in order to go to semi and formal? I’ve never seen such bad grades on my SSC til now. Y’all have some whack system of points and making us go to so many dumb ass events no one cares about in order to go to semi or formal. And on top of that, no one tells you about the hidden costs of a sorority. Yeah, we pay like 1.5k in dues but it’s so much more than that. Want merch? -100$. Want to look good for semi or formal? -100$ each event. The money that has been spent on makeup, booze pres, mandatory donations to our charities adds up so much. And my sorority decided to charge EXTRA for our formal this year as if it wasn’t included in our dues already. I’m so glad I got out of this hell haha. Not to emotion the constant cattiness between girls in higher tier sororities and lower tiers. God; it must be tiring being so hateful to girls who literally did nothing wrong to you all the damn time

Idk about your chapter's dues (mine are not $1500) but yeah, sororities (and the Greek system in general) are geared towards first and second years who want to be really social and go to a lot of events, before school gets more serious. It's why people get tired of it by their third or fourth year and don't go to as many things or only go to the things they want to go to.
But it's also about being in the right sorority. Some chapters DO care about grades and have study hours and academic resources, and exchanges are not mandatory. Some of my favourite moments were just studying with other girls in our chapter room and being surrounded by girls who were focused academically helped push me to be better.

If any girls are on here trying to scope out if they want to join a sorority, don't let these negative things stop you! I know that dues vary from sorority to sorority, and its often not something that is disclosed during the recruitment period (it doesn't seem that natural to jump straight into finances before making real connections with girls). And coming from a sorority that has some mandatory stuff, it really all works out for the best. You learn how to balance your time, push yourself to try new things, make new friends outside your sorority, and more often than not if you are mature enough to organize your life around them (which again, is for your benefit now and in the future) then you not only will have a good balance between academics and life, but you can actually see yourself doing so much better in school. Many girls have seen an increase in their GPAs since being in a sorority, there's so many resources at your disposal to help facilitate that.
Exchanges are also never mandatory, and semi and formal don't have to be extra costs if you know how to keep costs low (exchanging past dresses with sisters, doing your own hair and makeup, etc...)

To be fair, I didn’t find out a lot of the small additional costs before I joined a sorority or how the everyday systems worked when I went through recruitment cuz I didn’t know it was something to ask about either
