national reputation

by:

I was going through the discussions and saw the one about national reputations. I've done some research on this on my own and seems KKG, DG, AOPi, APhi have lots of chapters and are more known on a national scale across Canada and the US. By looking at this site it seems that two from the list are not so popular at UBC though. What are the benefits of being in nationally popular sororities? Why are the other two not that popular at UBC? especially AOPi, I know some people in Ontario schools and have heard that they dominate there

AOPi's really new so they're building their reputation. Out of the list if you want a nationally rep'd one I'd go Kappa or DG

AOPi definitely has potential. They are new but have been stepping it up this year, and doing a good job at it. They are known to have the largest number of chapters nationally which might explain their popularity. KKG/DG also have great national reputations. APhi has been at UBC forever but they still remain at the bottom and that might be because of poor sisterhood they had in the past, heard a lot of girls dropped previously. As for the benefits of being in a popular national sorority to be honest I'm not sure but it might be a greater alumni network and more people outside the greek system knowing about your organization.

Yeah just cause Kappa DG and APhi are top in some places doesn't mean you'll necessarily want to join them at UBC. Just rush and see

National rep doesn't really matter unless you plan on travelling to multiple different chapters so I would say just choose the one with a good reputation at the specific school you want to attend for the best experience because that's where's you'll be spending 99% of your time!

Totally agree with this! If you want a good top tier experience at your own school I wouldn't look into national ratings because that wouldn't make much sense even if a phi has good national standings you might regret it later.

I don't agree with this. If you are looking at your sorority experience as solely the four years you are active then I suppose it can be true but having a strong national presence is extremely beneficial in your alumni years.

ADPi and Alpha Gam are also very well established in the states, don't count them out!

Actually Alpha Gam and ADPi are not that popular in the states. Alpha Gam doesn't have that many chapters. All of the 8 sororities at UBC are established but the ones listed above are known to be power houses. That being said I don't how being part of one of the 4 just because of their great national rep will enhance your sorority experience. Join one that you feel most comfortable with.

Having a strong national presence might actually be beneficial in the long run, when you need connections. Wish I had known this before going through recruitment. I like the sorority I'm in but if I had known this my decision might have been different.

It's important but don't get hung up on it. Imagine if you join just for that and are stuck with a bad fit for four years.

National rankings for the sororities are on Newsweek. Across the globe Delta Gamma, Kappa, and ADPI made it into the top five sororities world wide... pretty impressive we have all three of them at UBC! :) The Number one rated sorority across the world is Zeta Tau Alpha which UBC doesn't have but any of the other three are a good fit nationally! Omicron, Alpha Phi, and Theta are rated 9th 10th and 11th, so with almost any sorority at UBC you will have a great national rep! don't fret it. Realistically though join your fit that works best for the school because most people utilize their membership the most within the campus.

you forgot gamma phi which was ranked 14th on the same list. You also never mentioned alpha gamma delta, although ranked 18th, is still impressive it made the top sororities of the world list.

but considering there are only 26 sororities in total nationally being placed 14th and 18th is not that impressive.

in reply to "true" my point was that whoever that was forgot about two of the best sororities on the UBC campus. Gamma phi was 14th which is still really good and they are one of the top sororities at UBC.

"two of the best sororities on UBC campus" what a joke. maybe in the past not anymore.

K dont open that can of worms here please. Every single thread ends up in an argument over rankings. Pnms are getting turned off, which is going to screw us all over come September. Its great that you think alpha gam and gamma phi are top sororities. Some people in the system agree with you, some do not. End of story.

in reply to Just Dont, if it makes you feel better, GPB had highest recruitment rankings last year.

by: Are you sure?

If that is true then why did they have to have 4 pref parties BASED ON RETENTION on not only 3 like dg kappa adpi? Sure, they may have had the best retention of the girls who did pref them, but they clearly had to have had lower retention after tours and invitationals than the top three. You may have some of YOUR top girls accept your bids, but that could be because some of the best girls in recruitment didn't come into your room for pref ;)

Honestly, why would you make that comment? The girl was NOT DISAGREEING WITH YOU! Stop trying to derail the thread, you look desperate. If you are a gamma phi, go home because your causing more issues than your worth.

Honestly all the sororities are ranked quite highly and UBC in general has a very good Greek presence at least in Canada. During rush keep an open mind because it doesn’t really matter as long as you click with your sorority especially since you’ll be spending your 4 years with the particular chapter you join regardless of how it’s ranked nationally. Other than that, if you’re really curious ask them during recruitment I’m sure they’d be more than happy to answer (or check their official website for alum stats)
