what does it take?

by:

How hard is it to get bids from the top tier sororities? And what do they look for? I've heard some are just based on looks, but then I've seen schools in the south (Bama, UT) which you have to be a legacy, have stellar grades, money, looks, etc. Can someone help me out? Thanks!

Being a legacy gets you in for sure. Being pretty obviously is a plus, but personality/being able to get along with the rest of the girls is important. These girls are older than you and can tell whether you're being yourself or being fake just to impress them

Kappa, ADPi and DG are great and all, but there are 5 more sororities each with amazing girls. There shouldn't be such an emphasis on them.

Is it hard to receive a bid from them though? Would it be unrealistic to think that you could receive a bid from KKG, ADPi, and DG?

Hello Curious,

I'm from one of the "Top Three" you mentioned [hah, whatever that means...], and while I had a relative in the sorority, most girls are NOT legacies, and grades and money don't factor in. In terms of "looks", there's a dress code for each event [Tours, Invitationals, and Pref specifically] so you want to make sure that you're paying attention to that. We follow the rules quite strictly, and appreciate girls that do the same :)

Just be confident and see who you connect with, then you will be the happiest no matter what sorority you end up in!

Just be yourself! I'm in one of those 3 sororities that you just mentioned and when I rushed this site didn't exist. I had no idea about reputations and just so happened to get along with girls in what you call "top tier". If you belong it'll happen naturally!

I wouldn't say "hard," but everyone wants these three so you have to keep in mind there's a lot of competition.

In reply to the last comment...does age apply as well? I'm not a freshman but I want to rush next year...what are my likelihood to receive a bid?

Toonnss of Second years get bids, no difference there. Sometimes we're a little uneasy about Seniors because they only have a year left and then we have to scramble to get a bigger pledge class next year. However, if we get along really well it should really matter the year.

Looks unfortunately is a huge part of it, but I think that personality is a huge factor. You could have the face of an angel but if you can't have a conversation during recruitment they wont be seeing you again. ADPI and DG are notorious for picking bombshell beautiful girls, Kappa is as of this year also. Keep your confidence high during the process and maybe you wont even feel you fit in any three of them; who knows!

Honestly, the top tier sororities might not even be for you. Instead of worrying about getting a bid from them, you should be worrying about getting a bid from the group that you feel most at home in. Posts like this are why this site is bad and should not be taken as seriously as many potential new members will take it.

Dear Curious,

I recommend just being yourself during recruitment, that way you will find the best organization that fits your personality. Recruitment is like speed dating on crack just be confident and you should be fine.

Hi Curious,

I am also in one of the three you mentioned and can reiterate what the posts near the top said. The best thing you can do is relax and try to have a real conversation with the girls. One thing that always stands out is effort on the rushee's part to try to get to know us as individuals- it makes the conversation so much easier when it goes both ways!

Also, drink coffee! By the end of the first day EVERYONE is tired, and if you go into a great room when you're exhausted it can come across as not wanting to be there. We try to give the benefit of the doubt near the end of the day, but try to finish strong!

A word of advice: do not tell people in person that you want in the top three, or that you want a particular one of us. You never know who's friends with whom and you do not want to burn bridges before you start.
