rush questions

by:

Entering my first year at UBC. Definitely joining a sorority. What do I need to know before rushing? I'm talking stuff you would have wanted to know before joining. Are there any groups I should avoid?

It's ironic that you are suggesting that some groups are superficial. I find your comment equally judgemental and superficial. I wonder what "better quality organization" you're a part of...

It's funny to hear how angry bottom tiers get when something like this comes up. The girls gonna figure it out when she meets everyone in person... might as well let her know now so she adjusts her standards appropriately.

Don't bother reading this website if you want to rush into a sorority. Just because a sorority is "top tier", it doesn't mean you'll fit in. Sorority life can be a complete waste of time if you aren't in the RIGHT sorority for YOU.

If you are interested in what achievements each sorority has gotten check the ubc sorority website:

www.ubcsororities.com/about-us/awards

maybe this will help your decision making

Avoid any groups that don't seem genuine to YOU. Only you can be the judge of that. Also make sure you spend time on your recruitment application, they actually read all of it, so don't rush through when filling it out online.

to freshman:

1. It's better to rush first year because you already have good grades from high school (you got into ubc for a reason) otherwise if you rush second year with poor grades it can be harder.
2. be genuine, don't try to impress people
3. there's nothing to avoid but make sure you're comfortable with the girls you choose, and you can be yourself with them.
4. don't be discouraged if it doesn't work out with your initial top pick, get to know the girls who do invite you back better because you can change your mind. You can't make judgements on solely one time of seeing people, that's why there's more than one round.
5. if rushing with a friend, make your own decision. If you end up together that's great, if you don't there's plenty of girls who have best friends in a different sorority.

I wouldn't suggest avoiding certain sororities because that excludes you from getting into a good possible fit! many people will say "Adpi's and DG's are shallow" but that is just a stereotype because they are two of the prettiest out of the 8. You may also here smack talk about the two "bottom tier" sororities, this is just because they happen to be smaller organizations who hold less involvement. I wouldn't say to go through it with no prior stereotypes. That is what I did and I ended up finding where I was welcomed and fit. That's all I think on this topic hope it was helpful :p
