If it were a possibility should sororities have their own houses?

It came up before but only rich chapters like kappa and gphi could afford it and aoii and theta etc couldn't so it was decided that they wouldn't do it to be fair to all sororities so none are disadvantaged

agd is actually the only one who cannot afford it

I never understood the whole thing about some chapters being disadvantaged. If anything the chapters with the houses maybe the ones who are disadvantaged because that raises dues. Besides going greek isn't about living in a house and if your reason for picking one chapter over another is because one has a house then maybe greek life isn't for you.

All chapters could afford it except a select few and gphi and kappa aren't the richest chapters, they're the chapters with the richest members/alumni base and that =/= richest chapter

lol tiers =/= money from internationals, the only sorority who couldn't afford it, like ? said, is agd

also the reason why every sorority has to be able to afford a house for any to get it is for when it comes to recruitment.
if some sororities had houses and others didn't, it's seen as an "advantage" to the ones who do, esp. if say agd was the only one who didn't have a house while all the others did, it could affect pnm decisions, so that's where the disadvantage supposedly comes in.

If the majority of the chapters have houses then the Panhel building can become more exclusive.

Every sorority can afford a house except for aopi who isn't even trying. If all sororities do get houses they probably won't be close to each other so recruitment would likely still happen in panhel and then maybe for their top 3 or 2 pnm's would do "house tours" just like in the states.

Aoii can afford a house. As stated above, agd is the only chapter that can’t afford a house.

In all honesty not having a house bothers me. Sure we have chapter rooms but it is not as personal as being able to run home on bid day and having a physical place to be home away from home.

Wish we had houses but at the same time where the hell are you going to build 8 huge sorority houses on campus considering a square foot of land out here costs 2 million dollars

We could always by houses and renovate them. If panhel gave us a list of requirements and a budget to get houses then we could all have a couple girls make up proposals and start from there.

Has a vote ever been taken on how many chapters actually want houses?

Hey y'all

A big part of why theres a struggle for housing is because UBC is on unceded terrority. Because of this, there is a certain amount of infrastructure that can be built on campus, and those spots are filling up. We could buy houses/space on campus and renovate for sure, however because of the low capacity/high cost, I'm not sure it would be a good investment for any chapter. Additionally, we could go off campus, but Point Grey has some of the highest cost of land in Canada, so again, potentially a bad investment considering you would have to go past Pacific Spirit park to get a theoretical greek row, and then we would be extremely far from the frats. ALL IN ALL, a big part of why we don't have houses is due to the climate of real estate in Vancouver, combined with limited space on campus.

There is a house on sale and the street would be so cute for a sorority row.
It is only a 10 minute walk from the panhel house.

5650 Hampton Place. Only 2.5 mil

Recruitment would be so much better!

Just saying but Alabama spent $13000000 on the Phi Mu house but we can't spare $2500000. I wonder were the majority of our dues is actually go considering they are a third of what some schools in the States pay and they have a house AND a mandatory meal plan.

By: Expensive?

1) you should know exactly where your dues are going
2) the cost of everything in Vancouver and at ubc is a lot higher. In order to live in a house and on a meal plan with current prices would probably be around 7000 a year, not including chapter dues. You really can't compare the US around Canada, since the climate around cost of living here is so different. At most southern schools.

Ideally I would love a house, but it's not realistic at the current space and time to find 8 houses all within walking distance of the frat village unless panhel sold its current space OR knocked down panhel and built townhouses instead in its space.

Im already in a sorority at another school but I am transferring. I was interested in the housing situation because I dont really understand the whole panhellenic building thing. If I am in sorority A does that mean I have to live with people in sorority B or C?
Also if I am understanding if someone wanted to gift a chapter a house they couldnt accept it? (I know someone who knows someone 😉)
