how expensive to join a sorority?

by:

I've always been interested in joining a sorority but financially I don't have a lot of extra money. How expensive would you say it is to join? and if you were/are in a sorority is it worth the cost?

It's only worth the cost if you get involved. Will probably add up to approximately $1000 each year

Thanks for the reply! Would you also happen to know how much it costs to live at the "house"?

that's an extra cost because there's only a few members from each chapter that get to live in panhel. I believe the rent is around $700 per month

You don't live "in house" here. You can live in Panhellenic house but a bunch of girls from different sororities and even girls not in sororities live there, it's managed by a totally diff organization

For your first year as a new member, it can range from $1100-$1500. It will be a little bit cheaper after that (~200) since you don't have to keep paying for badge fees and initiation stuff to International. Living in Panhel is 100% optional and relatively competitive to try and get a spot. It's about 700$ a month I think

You can find this if you Google Panhellenic House but basically you apply in the spring (it's pretty early, I think in February) by filling out an application form and paying an application fee. Housing is all female, so some non-sorority women do live there but it's mainly sorority girls. Panhel rent is $725 a year but you pay it 4 months at a time (so you would pay $2800 at once) so just be prepared for that.

If you don't have a ton of money, joining a sorority probably isn't for you. Dues can be anywhere from $1000-$1300 a year, and that doesn't include extra things like clothing, outings etc. A lot of people in the Greek system do work part-time jobs during the school year, but a lot don't and there is sometimes unspoken pressure to spend money on dinners/meals out, buying a lot of stuff for your little during Big/Little week, stuff like that. If you are struggling just to pay for dues then you'll feel even more stretched and stressed out.

There are other organizations on campus like SISU (which is an outdoors all-girls club that plans hiking/yoga/outdoorsy stuff for girls and they seem to have a great community) or the women's centre that still give you a rad female community without having to pay for a sorority if you want something like that :)
