sorority recruitment
by: First Year
I'm starting my first year in the fall and want to join a sorority. I'll be living in res...but I'm worried because I've heard that the sororities are really hard to get into and judge you if you're not pretty enough? Is this true or just rumours? How will I know which sorority is right for me?
I would love if people could talk about some of the reasons they joined and why they stayed

All sororities will judge you on your appearance, but for most chapters, that is far and away the least important value. They look for people who are kind, can hold a conversation, do well in school, volunteering and work experience, etc. When you are being judged on your appearance, it's mostly on things like, did you brush your hair and your teeth, do you dress well; things like that! The actives are there to recruit members based on a lot more important values than how "pretty" you are. If youre interested in rushing, go for it! If it's meant to be, it's meant to be. Hope to see you in September!

Hey girl, it's awesome that you're thinking about joining a sorority and are open to new experiences!
You will be "judged" on how you present yourself. We want to see that you care about making a good impression, but don't stress about this! UBC Sororities sends out a guide for how to dress for each round of recruitment - this won't be super strict, but more of a guideline so you know how formal each round will be.
We mostly want to see that you are dressed comfortably in clothing that you're happy with, that you washed and brushed your hair and that you look neat and clean. We're not judging you on things you have no control over, such as how "pretty" you are. We're looking forward to getting to know you :)

I initially joined for the social and sisterhood aspect of it, but ended up staying because it pushed me to go out of my comfort zone (in terms of leadership positions and ubc rec events). It's an opportunity that not many students can have, especially in Canada, so why not take advantage of it? At the end of the day, the memories you'll form will be worth it.

Joined cause I didn't know anyone at UBC and felt so comfortable & at home with the sorority I prefed, stayed cause I literally met my best friends ever and got SO MUCH support, also social aspect is amazing. Don't think I'd have half the amount of friends I have now without ubc sororities.

I joined because I wanted to see what it was about, although I was super sceptical. I stayed because I love having a place I feel valued and somewhere I can do crazy fun things. When else do you get to make up a synchronized swimming routine with your best friends and perform it? honestly its better than I ever imagined.
