competitiveness

by:

I'm a US student who has applied to UBC, and if I attend, will rush this fall. I've also applied to some schools in the southern part of the US, where formal recruitment/rush is extremely competitive, and being a part of Greek life is a huge honor. Is UBC's rush/recruitment competitive with only 8 houses? If so, is it the same level of intensity as some US schools?

It's definitely not AS competitive - there are eight sororities and about 850+ women (each sorority has just over 100 girls) in the Greek system and 50, 000 students at UBC in total. There are pros and cons to that - pros being that it is a really tight knit community, cons being not many outside of the Greek system really cares if you're in a frat/sorority. BUT that's not the reason you should be joining - you should be doing it because you want to. It's the best way to network and meet a large group of people right in your first year, and it's probably the best way to party (if that's what you're looking for) and make amazing connections.

Recruitment happens at the end of September and last year 480 girls registered. There are three rounds of recruitment. Obviously not everyone that went through got bids, and the recruitment process IS competitive. You are being judged for your GPA, looks, leadership, involvement, and of course your personality and how well you carry the conversation in the rooms, just as you would be in the States. And, obviously, some sororities are more competitive than others. Being from the States means pretty much nothing and won't give you a leg up in recruitment unless the girl you're talking to is from the same place or something.

The sororities here are so damn geeky, aside from dg and adpi I would recommend staying a GDI (or going elsewhere)

Is Dg plastic? Sure but they are the closest thing to an American sorority. Sororities in the US wouldn't be caught dead with Indians in their sorority, like it or not that's reality down there.

DG isn't plastic, they're irrelevant. They recruited a BRUTAL pledge class this year - it's funny they had the same bid day shirts as Alpha Gam because no one could actually tell the girls from each pledge class apart. Their relations and social media sucks, and they're definitely far from top tier now. Not involved, no athletic involvement to speak of, no one went to their philanthropy event earlier this month, and they're always mediocre-bad when it comes to grades and academics. Calling them 'plastic' implies that they in some way are like American sororities when they're not
