how competitive is the rush process at ubc?

by: Pnm

Hello everybody! I am considering rushing for a sorority and was wondering around how much people are accepted into one. Are all PNMs successful in finding a place or is the process really selective? Thanks so much guys!

Last year over 400 women went through recruitment and 289 joined a sorority. You'll likely end up in a sorority if you really want to be in one, it's just a matter of which one. Some sororities are more selective than others.

i knew a couple of people who went through recruitment but didn't end up joining a sorority - most of the time if you don't get asked back anywhere its because all the sororities you put down did not ask you back even if others did so remember to keep and open mind and try to feel where you fit best instead of where u wanna be (dont be discouraged by "selectiveness" some people in selective sororities get dropped from less so ones and i's simply because it's not the best suit for them so try to feel out which girls are most similar to you) also, a lot of times girls do get asked back but not where they were hoping for so they stop going through recruitment (if this happens to you you shouldn't stop! just because u felt u liked a sorority after a brief visit didnt mean it was your home - you are likely more suited to the places that asked u back). or if being in a sorority isnt that important to some girls, the time commitment of recruitment is too much and gthey ultimately give up/forget.

the best advice i could give any PNM is keep an open mind, try to figure out which girls are like you vs. which girls you want to be like, and trust the system. although your sorority sisters should push you to be better, if you choose girls you are unlike but wish to be like you will ultimately feel unhappy and out of place (i've seen it happen!!) rather than become like them. as for trusting the system - after invitationals i had two favourite houses (one suited for me and one, as well as one i thought i wanted to be like) as well as one sorority that made me feel rather important which i ultimately ranked above the other sorority i liked but did not feel i was similar to/was intimidated by. in the end i got asked to pref by my favourite that i was suited to (which i chose in the end) and the other one i felt i was not suited to - but in retrospect would have fit almost equally as well in so it turned out the system knew me better than i knew myself. its easy to get caught up in sororities that make every PNM feel like they're guarenteed a bid or the type of girl they wanna be - but try to find a match to who you are and i promise you'll find you home! good luck yall <3

Last year around 400 girls were signed up for recruitment and around 290 got bids. However, this was partially because a lot of girls do drop after each round of recruitment.

There are chapters that cut a lot more girls than others, but any girl that truly wants to join a sorority will find her place.

It sounds weird to say there are more "competitive" chapters, but generally if you have really good grades, play sports, are involved in leadership positions, and are pretty (sorry that's not PC but it's true) then you will have a really good chance of getting into a sorority.

Also, it definitely is a selective process. However, this is because each sorority knows the vibe of their chapter really well. A lot of times pnm's will think that one sorority is -the- one for them, when in reality they wouldn't fit in there at all. The girls in the chapter know it, but the pnm is still devastated when they get cut. However, this is just an opportunity to find the chapter that is really right for you!

Each sorority is pretty much the same - they all do philanthropy, play sports, have sisterhood events, do volunteering, have leadership positions you can get involved in - so keep an open mind and have fun!!
