formal recruitment
by: LeeHow big of cuts do houses make each round? About how many girls attend a house during preference, and of those, how many are given a bid? I know it varies depending on the house

Some houses cut earlier in the process, most do their biggest cuts the round just before preference. For preference rounds there can easily be up to 150 girls still invited to a house. The houses know that most of these girls have two other houses they are attending for pref so they don't want to cut their lists too short. Keep in mind the size of each houses pledge class is determined as a percentage of how many girls are going through recruitment. Panhel establishes this quota. If a house has more room for girls, they will extend further bids to girls once all the formal bids have been extended & accepted. A house can only then offer a bid to a girl who was not matched with a house after pref. A house may also wait for spring rush where it is a more informal although competitive environment. A PNM has the best chance of getting a bid by keeping an open mind through the whole process. The girls in the houses DO really know who would be happy in their sorority. Go with the flow!

It honestly depends on each house. Some houses that could use the girls (G Phi, SDT, maybe KD and others) try to keep as many girls in the recruitment process as long as possible. Other houses like Pi Phi and A Phi have the option to cut as many or few girls as they want because of their reputations. It does depends on house size and Panhel as well. Like the above comment said, keep an open mind!

RFM is the methodology that tells the sororities how many girls they have to "cut" based on previous years statistics. So, the "more popular" sororities who usually get more back, will have to cut more PNMs early on. Sounds harsh but it actually makes a lot of sense because PNMs will then be able to focus on the chapters they have the best chance of getting into, rather than hyper focusing on a chapter that even if they were invited back to, really don't have a chance of getting a bid. It also helps all the chapters to get quota or close to it.

Your higher tier houses will make deep cuts early. Kappa is notorious for very deep cuts after open house round. Chi O, Aphi, DG and Pi Phi will make big cuts as well. Fortunately, they realize it isn't far to carry a PNM if they do not have a sincere interest in her. Also, remember these 5 houses are competing with each other for typically the same type PNM. Kappa does "glitter and glue" where the other houses not quite as much.
Hopefully, if you keep an open mind you will end up where you are supposed to be. Recruitment is not in your hands, but in the hands of the chapters. Keep in mind too, the women that will be your pledge sisters are not the women you are meeting in each house.

As a girl who did drop, I didn't regret it because I didn't clique with the girls and didn't think I would fit in in the 2 houses I had left. However, I was sad and upset that I didn't get to join a sorority that I felt at home in. I do understand why people say don't drop, but I do think it's important to join a house that you will fit into, rather than to just join a house to join a house.

For middle tier houses there is less of a huge cut off all at once. They will keep girls longer as PNMs are cut from 'higher" houses through the process. It's a pretty consistent pace throughout the whole process. If you are invited back to a middle mid tier house for pref, your chances are really good that they really like you. The same actually goes for higher tier houses too. It is OK to tell your final pref girl that rushes you, that you really want to be a "insert sorority here" Only say this to ONE house if your truly believe it. You don't want to be insincere! If you behave badly during recruitment, other houses will hear stories. Don't be that girl!
