sorority dues
by: freshman
I noticed on some house pages people talking about expensive dues. Will the PanHellenic give us a list of the houses dues if they are all different? If some are really a lot more money I don't know if I should join those. How do I find out? Is there a list? Do the sororities tell us when we rush? I'm afraid to call panhel because I don't want them to think I am poor because I'm not. I just want to make a smart decision.

Any house that looks down on someone because they're "poor" is not a house you want to be in anyway. You're not the first person to wonder about dues. Just call Panhel. It's not like you need to give your name.
Most likely the older the house/longer its house has been on campus the less dues you have to pay. Chapters that are looking to build a house will most likely have much more expensive dues.

Yes, I am more interested in the sorority dues. I heard that the room and board is pretty close to the dorms if not even cheaper. I am just wondering how much money I have to pay for pledging. I am guessing that is an extra expense. After that are their monthly dues? How much do you typically spend a semester on shirts and dances and stuff like that?

I think you are asking the wrong question. Chapter dues are one thing and room and board is a completely different thing. Chapter dues are not always set a local level, but might be set nationally for the sorority...it all depends and is not something that Panhellenic could tell you. You might also have to pay parlor fees as a freshman and any year you live outside the house. Some chapters might have a different name for this fee.
As far as room and board, you might try and call the office of Fraternity, Sorority and Cooperative housing. Doubtful they will tell you by name, but can give you an average. I think you'll find them to be in line with the dorms. I agree that it would be nice if the R&B costs were in your booklets during recruitment, but they are not. I don't think I would ask the question during recruitment either. Like boys and booze, that is not something you discuss.
I don't think how long the house has been on campus has anything to do with what the charges will be. Chapters that don't own a house and are going to build have executive offices that they work through for funding.
Anticipate, like joining any organizations there are going to be costs you incur. Joining a sorority is for a life time and not just the 4 years you are in college.
