I understand formal recruitment and getting a bid. What is continuous or open bidding? Am I right thinking that all the sororities are only allowed to give the same number of bids out at formal rush? Aren't some houses bigger than others? I can't imagine every house has the same number of girls they need each year. Then I hear if you really liked a house and didn't get a bid from them at the final party you might still get a bid after formal rush is over? Or I can try to get a bid in the spring? I am getting nervous and confused about all of this. Can somebody explain? I really want to be in a sorority. Do I have a better chance if I just rush in the spring and try to find out which houses will do that?

If you are a freshman then definitely rush in the fall. If you go to every round and get invited to the last round then you will be put on the house's bid list and have a good chance of receiving a bid.
Every house will have a different quota of girls that they need, some more and some less. If a house not meet quota they may either give snap bids or participate in continuous recruitment either directly after recruitment or in the spring.
Don't worry. Just go through the process. You'll definitely end up somewhere.

Great response and easy to understand but I think you're a little unclear on what a snap bid is. Snap bids are given when a house does not meet quota. Houses can go over quota as long as they aren't at total so including a few others isn't snap bidding. Being below quota and needing a few more girls is snap bidding but it's true that the girls whom are snap bidded (is that a word haha?) don't know that they're snapped.

You are correct on snap bids..,sorry if I wasn't clear! It's easy to understand but hard to explain if you have never been through recruitment!
This might help too... Each house makes their bid list. The list is numbered from 1- whatever. Every PNM has ranked her final choices as well (the PNM will have a max of 3 or less) the matching begins by Panhellenic. Again let's say quota is 50. If PNM has ranked house Alpha as #1 and she is on Alpha's list 1-50 (this would be their top list, their second list would be 51- whatever) she matches and goes Alpha.

If she isn't on Alpha's list, then her 2nd choice is considered, etc... So finally all matching is done, but their might be some PNM's who did not match at all. Maybe they had Alpha down, but all 50 spots were filled. So perhaps Alpha only had 95 members to start with. They matched quota at 50, which brings them to 145, but campus total is 150. Alpha can look at their list and see if any of the PNM's they might have wanted are still available. (Could be a great PNM who got cross cut...but that's another story!!) so let's say there are 5 PNM's still available. Key to remember is the houses get their lists back earlier in the day in bid night. So Alpha tells Panhellenic they would like to offer bids to these 5 (these are snaps, because they snap them up at the end) so Panhellenic adds them to Alpha's bid list. When bids are passed out at Bid Night...Alpha is giving out 55 bids. None of the new members will know who was a snap. So now Alpha is at campus total of 150..., they took quota plus 5.

Continuous Open Bidding (COB): An opportunity for chapters that do not reach quota during primary recruitment to bid to total and/or quota. The continuous open bidding process is less formal, and not all chapters will participate in continuous open bidding.
FYI: Snap bids are done during formal recruitment. Formal recruitment is officially over after Bid Night. After that all bids are done via COB. A chapter could potentially (but doubtful) COB all year until the meet campus house quota limits. Some lower tier houses might COB after recruitment and then again in the spring. In the spring quite a few houses from all tiers might COB if they have open spots.
Hope this helps. I wouldn't worry about snap bids and COB. Go through recruitment and chances are you will find a house that fits you.

OK thank you for the information. I think I get it. Does a house ever go back and snap bid someone who they maybe cut for their final round of parties (if I get cross cut I guess from all three final houses) is there a chance that a house I cut or a house that cut me would give me a bid? I know I will be open minded going through rush. Do I have a better chance of not getting cut if I try to keep all my invitations to the middle houses over like Pi Phi or DZ or Chi O? Do they end up cutting a lot of girls more at the end of rush than the beginning? That's what I heard. I just want to be smart about it all. thank you for the information!

I doubt if a house cuts you they would come back and extend a COB bid. Most likely they have other PNM's on their list they wanted and that still might be available.
The top houses historically (past 4-5 years) are Alpha Phi, ChiO, Delta Gamma, Kappa and Pi Phi. Some might say otherwise. Unfortunately, the houses have the upper hand on where you will end up. Some houses make deep cuts after 1st round, others may carry you for a couple of rounds. You need to follow your heart as to where you feel comfortable. Every house has nice girls and some that aren't as nice, all pair with frats, have dances, philanthropy events and nice houses. Do not get caught up in what other people feel are "the best"....go where you think you would fit in and would like to live. The girls that are going to be your best friends and roommates you won't meet until after Bid Night when you meet your pledge sisters. You'll amaze yourself that through it all, you managed to find girls like you and no place you would rather be!

Ok, let's simplify this.
Panhellenic sets a max total of woman each chapter can have. Let's say it's 150.
During recruitment, towards the end Panhellenic determines what quota is going to be. (It's a calculation done based on how many woman are going to final parties. Houses don't know what
quota is until the end of
recruitment.)
So hypothetically Panhellenic determines that quota will be 50. So all houses can take a total of 50 woman.
But there might be a house that after they take 50 new members they are still under campus total of 150. (They might have had a lot of seniors graduate, girls dropping, study abroad or other reasons.) They might want to offer "snap bids" to help bring their numbers up. These bids would be given out the same night and the New members would not know who the snap bids went to. So when you hear "quota plus 3" that means the chapter took quota and 3 snaps. Usually the upper tier houses don't need to take snap bids.
COB is usually done just in the spring. However, last year Panhellenic raised house quotas after fall recruitment which was unusual. But some houses did a fall COB because they could. But, back to Spring COB. Spring COB is very informal. Chapters will invite woman over for dinner or whatever and offer them a bid. A spring COB class usually will only be less than 10. Again, the chapter still can't go over campus totals. But their might have been a new member or 2 that after getting a bid dropped or maybe a few are studying abroad, etc.
