Zetas Philanthropy
by: HelpCan someone help me understand this? “Zeta Tau Alpha’s national philanthropy is breast cancer education and awareness.” As a woman I understand that breast cancer is a huge thing and is very serious and it will affect my life in some way, shape, or form. But honestly c’mon I can’t name one woman who wouldn't know what breast cancer is and how serious it is (I mean every cancer is serious LOL). These women raise thousands of dollars to educate and draw awareness to something that people are already educated and aware about. Look up “pink-washing”, it’s a huge thing and Zeta is part of it. It’s a disgusting business tactic to draw in consumers and generate more money by branding and exploiting a disease. The thousands upon thousands of dollars that zeta raises should be donated to research for a cure. Just research it. Zeta is one of the many organizations and philanthropies that are creating a massive problem with their redundant amount of breast cancer education and awareness driven programs. These programs are blowing the deadliness and impact of the disease out of proportion in today’s day and age and it’s caused the public to think that breast cancer is like an “epidemic”. research it, it’s true! It is making women too anxious about their chances of developing breast cancer. If Zeta doesn’t want to donate their philanthropy money to breast cancer research that would make an ACTUAL contribution then they should change their philanthropy to educating and raising awareness for a different type of cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis. Obviously people don’t need to be further educated or made aware of breast cancer. PEOPLE WANT A CURE. The 5 year survival rate for invasive breast cancer is a wopping 91%! The 10 year survival rate for invasive breast cancer is 84%! The 5 year survival rate for cancer that is only located in the breast is 99%! The survival rate is massive compared to other cancers. I think Zeta focuses on breast cancer in the wrong way. They take the commonality of it as a bad sign instead of recognizing that despite breast cancer being the most common cancer, it has the 5th highest survival rate of all cancers with prostate cancer having the highest survival rate, thyroid as the 2nd, testis as the 3rd, and skin cancer as the 4th. In no way am I trying to downplay how awful breast cancer is. I just think that Zeta could be doing more with their immense philanthropy platform.

I definitely agree with some of the things you said. It’s awful that breast cancer is so common but it’s amazing that the survival rate is so high! I think their intentions with their philanthropy isn’t bad but I do think that it is outdated. Breast cancer treatment and research has come a long long long way in the past 10-15 years. Donating a huge amount of money towards educating people about it and making them aware about it seems unnecessary.

@True my point is that I wanted to draw awareness to this and specifically to the women in ZTA at purdue as they are the ones that can make the largest impact with their national organization. ZTA purdue is in a dire need of change within their organization on a chapter level and a national level. The time is now!

I used to be a zeta. We donate a lot of our money to the Purdue Center for Cancer Research, so it does go towards finding a cure. We don’t just raise money to spread awareness. I get what you mean with your original post but it’s just not true. Also it’s kinda low in my opinion to be bashing zeta raising money for breast cancer just because breast cancer “isn’t that deadly”...tell that to the girls in our house, or anyone for that matter, who have had their moms or other important female role models die from it. Just because it’s not the most deadly disease out there doesn’t mean it’s not a cause raising money for.

My friend is in ZTA and I go to BMOC, they donate a ton of their money to the Purdue Center for Cancer Research. Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer, and as collegiate women, it is something that can hit close to home, which is why their organization probably chose that cancer. Just because it isn’t another cancer that is more deadly doesn’t mean they don’t care about it. This post is kind of dumb

Ok whoever wrote this post needs to think about their philanthropy and how much their sorority even raises. Where does the money even go for your house? No sorority raises remotely as close as ZTA does with their philanthropy. No point in having a philanthropy if you don’t even raise money.

Hi old Zeta why am I not surprised that you are still on GreekRank! If you actually read the whole post by the OP you would see that they said they were not trying to downplay breast cancer. It was the fact that a vast majority of the proceeds Zeta makes from their philanthropy does not in fact go to research it goes to education and awareness. Research is only mentioned once on the national organizations philanthropy webpage. I think you missed the message the OP was getting at. The education and awareness aspect that their philanthropy is centered around is outdated and should instead be centered around donating the vast majority of proceeds to research instead. And if they don’t want to donate to research then they should instead center their philanthropy around the education and awareness of a different type of cancer or disease. Zetas philanthropy has a huge national platform and its unfortunate that it is outdated

Yes I do. I never said ZTA purdue specifically. I was talking about their national organization and how their philanthropy is outdated and they could be doing more with their immense national platform but they are too busy more suppressing POC
