how do function parties work?

by:

I'm a new student at Purdue for next year.

How does different fraternities function with one another? Like if they're not in same tier, can they get into the parties by virtue of being in Greek life. Have upper-mid tier houses ever stopped lower tier from coming to parties if they're not specifically invited?

Thanks

I’ve been everywhere and it’s really common for fraternities to function with each other especially since it means bigger and more fun functions.

But Purdue Greek Life culture is really rigid where a lot of houses party with the same houses over and over again and don’t party along all tiers, it’s worse than some of the best party schools.

But it’s finally starting to change since this is the first time since I’ve been here where it seems like about as many decent houses have gotten off probation (Theta Chi, Pike, Dchi) as have been put on (SAE, Kappa Sig, Phi Psi). So really as long as you’re in one of the biggest ~15 houses you’ll have a fun time with different groups of people. And even if not people still love it.

Hope this answers everything I remember being just as curious how Greek life actually works.

Basically, as a dude you can't just go waltzing into any function. If your house, ABC, pairs with XYZ, then of course that means you'll be on the list and you can go. But if XYZ pairs with FGH the next weekend, you can't just go because you want to.
Now, of course, there are exceptions. As I mentioned before, there's a list. For most functions, brothers can add one or two people to the list to get them inside. Sometimes there's a "no guys" rule, but oftentimes this means that you could go if one of your friends puts you as their guest.

It's really not a matter of tiers for getting in. For girls it kinda is, but not for guys. Guys don't want other guys packing the place and getting in the way of them getting laid. If you're bottom tier and a top tier guy puts you as his guest, no one will bat an eye. However, if you try to go to a function at any tier without being invited, you'll get turned away.

There's a lot of mix between top and mid houses for functions. Bottom houses, however, tend to only mix with bottom houses. So if tier is something you really care about, you'll want to shoot for at least mid. Just keep in mind that tiers mean nothing, and no matter which house you join, there will be plenty of functions, girls to meet, and guys to befriend.

What would be an example of mid-tier houses versus bottom tier?

Like Beta/DU/DChi considered mid tier? What houses do they function with?

I feel most houses don't tell too much about who they function with during rush.

I mean tiers only matter so much and you’ll hear different things from different people but yeah those houses are like the end of mid tier.

After that there’s just a big group of lower houses. All can be fun though. There’s no real point in getting caught up in the tiers.

There are plenty of frat rankings on here, just find a few and you'll see. Most of those rankings don't even include the true bottom houses. For instance, you never really see Alpha Sig on those, but they still have plenty of functions. It's just that you never hear of Alpha Sig and Phi Psi functioning together or something like that. Basically, there's a good chance that if you make it into a house that often appears in rankings, you'll probably function with every other house listed as well. If you choose a house that's not even listed, however, you probably won't.
Both groups (mid/top and bottom) have their own social circles and are full of great people.

Both answers are a bit different but are also both pretty accurate
