academic sororities?
by: PnmI really want to rush but I'm worried about balancing Greek life with academics, especially since I'll be in engineering. I heard some houses force you to go out. Are there any sororities that are more academically focused than others? Or should I wait until sophomore year to rush?

No houses force you to go out that's bs. You'll find engineers in all houses and at the end of the day it is entirely your decision how you want to balance your time. I know girls in all houses who don't go out at all and spend time studying. You can look at house GPA's but there really isn't that much deviation from one house to another. Speaking as an engineer, yeah your sorority sisters can help you, but in a male dominated field you're going to find that most of your studying won't be with your sister's it'll be with guys in your class.

There are some houses that might cut you when they find out you're an engineer. They know engineering is hard and will take up a lot of time (maybe even leading you to drop). However, that obviously doesn't mean it can't be done. College is hard, in part because of classes, but largely because of the difficulty of managing your time. If you can learn to prioritize and not be lazy, you will be fine. I am in engineering and I went out every weekend and still made Dean's List.
If a house gives you a bid, they want you. They also want you to succeed and keep their GPA up. They won't force you to go out any night, let alone the night before an exam. Don't wait until sophomore year - classes only get harder as time goes on (especially in engineering).

Okay, so whoever said certain girls are band from going to functions because of "looks" or "standards" is 100% wrong. It's honestly so disappointing to see that these rumors still exists. Yes, I am in one of these houses, so Iike I said earlier, I know for a fact that this is completely wrong. Each member is free to do and go wherever she pleases. Please stop spreading these ridiculous rumors. It's honestly pathetic.

I'm in a house, which has a reputation for being one of the "party"/"dumb" houses, and I am an engineer. I had to buckle down once classes really started picking up, which resulted in me staying in a lot. Many of my other sisters stayed in too, even though most believe that all of the girls in my house go out constantly. Even if a house has a party reputation, there will still be plenty of girls that stay in to study and keep you company. It's also a perk that if I ever did want to go out, I always had a party to go to and sisters to go with. I personally think it's better to be in a house where you have the opportunity to go out whenever you want because it's easier to stay in than to be in a house that doesn't give you that opportunity to go out when you actually want to or have time to.

this is false. there are houses that force their girls to go out and some houses only allow certain girls (the prettier ones) to attend functions with top houses (aphi) and also will ban girls from going to functions that aren't up to their standard (pi phi & dz)
i've had friends in both houses tell me this first hand. sucks but it's true and anyone who tries to deny it is 99.9% probably in that house.
