If your a legacy to a sorority but to a different school how influential is that in the rush process at UNC?

Legacy isn't by school. It's by sorority/fraternity.

I am a legacy to a sorority through my mom, but she didn't go to UNC, I didn't know if going to a different school or the same school had an effect on your chances at all

It depends on the sorority. Some sororities take legacies more seriously than others. Generally if you're a legacy with UNC, a sorority will view that as in you are likely to accept a bid from them (which they like). Many houses have rules from their nationals that say things like if a legacy makes it to pref round or third round then they have to get a bid. But depends on sorority

As mentioned above, many sororities have specific rules/guidelines for handling legacies and it has nothing to do with the school your mom/grandmother attended. I believe you can find most of these rules/guidelines online for each specific sorority. A couple generalities are that legacies automatically get invited back to at least the 2nd round, and if you get invited to pref round then you are guaranteed a bid.
