fraternity affiliation

by:

I am considering transferring to UNC and was wondering how welcoming fraternities are to affiliates. It looks like the chapter at UNC for my fraternity is one of the top ones, and so I would definitely try to get involved. If anyone has any insight into how this usually plays out, let me know.

dont judge me for making the call that it "looks like my fraternity is one of the top ones." I hate this website just as much as the next guy, but its all ive got to go on.

Most likely they will because of nationals. Most of the time fraternities and sororities have to send in a report of why you didn't let them affiliate, its a lot of unecessary work. If you're decently cool it's not a problem. Same goes with sororities they basically have to. I've met people that transferred in and were wired AF and didn't fit in but we're allowed to affiliate

The best answer that I can give is "it depends". My experience has been that fraternity chapters can vary from school to school. For that matter it can even vary within the same chapter from different time periods. Certainly you share a common bond with the men of your fraternity, and sometimes that is enough to transition into active membership at a different chapter. (one of my best friends in my chapter was a transfer from another university). However, there are times when the personalities/style/etc of the members of the other chapter are so different from your own, that it is impossible to comfortable in that environment. My advice: Visit them, get to know them and just like any type of social relationship, if it is right you will know it. Hope this helps, Good Luck!

I understand that you probably don't want to share too much info about yourself, but really hard to say if I don't where you're transferring from. Are you at a southern public school? The southern public Greek system is its own animal. As an example, a "Fiji" chapter at a Big 10 school or a small liberal arts college will be dramatically, dramatically different from Phi Gam at UNC. But who knows. The person above me is right, give it a try and find out! May work out great, may not. Only one way to know.
