sophomore rush

by: carolinagirl

Hey yall, I was wondering if I could get some non-biased advice about rushing as a sophomore...
I rushed freshman year but dropped out because I didn't like it, but later in the year I realized I wanted more girl friends.
I don't know many people in sororities at UNC, but I do have a 3.9 GPA so I am assuming that might help?
Can anyone give any insight on the quota system? How many sophomores does each sorority have to take?
Do yall think it would be a good idea to rush as a sophomore even though I don't know many people in sororities? I worry that I wouldn't get invited back anywhere and that would suck...
Thanks so much! I really appreciate any help.

I did the same thing my Freshman year because I didn't know anybody and didn't enjoy the experience. Rushed Sophomore year and it has been the best decision I've made. I love it and your friends stay pretty consistent throughout college. Guessing, but I would have to say that your gpa will only keep you from getting dropped FOR THAT REASON. There are plenty of girls who get dropped who are great just because their gpa is low. Having a high gpa won't land you in any house. Hate to say it, but knowing people is very key. That being said, still go through it and see what you like and get.

What about as a sophomore transfer? Will it hurt terribly because I won't know anyone as long as I have a super high gpa and send in rec letters?

I rushed as a sophomore without knowing anyone and it went pretty well! I didn't end up in the house I expected originally, but I did choose the house where I clicked the best, which is what I was looking for.

Of course knowing someone would help, but that does not mean you can't still get a house you love. I can't stress enough that keeping an open mind is the most important thing!

Being a sophomore doesn't matter if you have that high of a GPA and you are outgoing and do well during rush. People hardly remember your "application" they mostly focus on your interviews during rounds!

I rushed as a sophomore with a similar GPA, great extracurricular activities, outgoing, and good looks and still got dropped from almost everywhere. You basically HAVE to know people OR be a transfer with like a super cool/interesting life (which mostly translates to lots of money). So, use your connections within sororities whenever possible because it's all based on who you're friends with if you're a sophomore.
