Quota for Fall Rush?

by:

I’ll be an incoming freshman next fall at UNC and was wondering how quota will work since there will apparently be only 9 sororities next year? I’ve seen on here that KKG is leaving and they usually didn’t meet quota, wouldn’t this mean quota would increase for next fall with only 9 houses offering bids or would they just cut more girls during rush? Not sure what the max number of girls they’d be able to take would be or if it would change

I’m guessing more freshman means a more competitive rush but I’m confused on whether the max/campus total changes or not if more girls end up rushing? I would assume it would since quota changes based on the number of girls as well but not really sure how it works?

Total, or the max number of members per chapter, is not a preset number either. It is adjusted after recruitment to reflect the most current membership numbers. Larger new member classes means Total is set higher.

Neither Quota nor Total exist to limit the membership sizes of sororities in general, their only purpose is to maintain equity among the chapters.

Quota is never a predetermined number set ahead of time. It depends on the number of pnms staying through the process and it actually sets itself after the pref round with a simple formula:

Number of pnms attending prefs and signing cards
divided by the number of chapters
= Quota

Quota, being fluid, adjusts from year to year with a larger or smaller pool of pnms and also with a change in the number of chapters.

There will likely be slightly larger new member classes this fall: If there are 500 additional freshmen and we go by the current statistics, then 60% would be women and 20% of those would go through recruitment, so there would be an additional 60 pnms going to 9 houses, an increase of 6 or 7 for each chapter. Kappa being out of the picture would not be quite as impactful, sadly, but that's why they are de-chartering.

Thank you that was super helpful!
Before I was thinking that the chapters would have a number in mind ahead of time that they were trying to reach at the start of rush, and not that quota was set only on pref night.

Does this mean that if a girl completes the rush process she should get paired with a house? Or is it still possibly that she could be cut before making it to pref night when quota is set due to the large amount of girls rushing?

It doesn't matter how many girls are rushing, there is a percentage-based formula that determines how many pnms are carried by each house from round to round called RFM. In this system, some houses are required to release more pnms at every round, others less, based on the chapters' relative historical recruiting strength. These numbers are given to the chapters by panhellenic, not decided by the chapters themselves, and are constantly adjusted during the process. RFM is designed to give pnms their best chance for choices at each round and allows them to focus on the chapters that are inviting them back.

There is no guarantee for any pnm to not get completely released, but not for the sake of numbers, just due to the chapters' decisions about fitting with them. It happens but is rare. Don't worry about it. The vast majority of pnms not completing the process dropped out on their own.

Remember that quota is not set before pref, it is set only after pref is complete and all pnms have signed their cards. If you put both your pref houses on your card you are guaranteed a bid to one of them, which might not be your first choice but you will get a bid. If you only have one pref house and put it on your card you will get that bid. You are not guaranteed a bid if you only put one of two pref houses down, because if you don't match with that one house before they reach quota then you have no other option and will not get a bid.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks! I think I understand how it works now
