Why is Phi Gamma Delta not called FIJI?!

Always wondered this. At every other school people abbreviate it FIJI, not Phi Gam, plus if you ask me FIJI sounds a million times better / cooler.

My cousin goes to IU, and he says it’s mostly a north/south thing. All over the Midwest and East and West Coast they are FIJIs.
In the Old South, they are mainly Phi Gams.

It’s a regional difference.

Pretty sure it's something about them being one of the first 10 (maybe 5) chapters. The first several are phi gam, and any after that is FIJI
