Does having mutual friends with someone in a frat but not necessarily knowing them increase your chances of getting a bid?

It's what you know, not who you know. If you are able to spew out massive amounts of knowledge about the different frats to brothers then they will respect you a lot. So get off greek rank and start memorizing all the chapters notable alumns and historic dates. That's what joining a frat is all about. Stop being such a geed

That approach will get you balled, unless the house in question is truly desperate.

Coming from somebody in a big 4 fraternity. While I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea to do some basic research on fraternities that you're interested in rushing I DEFINITELY would not flex your muscles to brothers about how much you know about their fraternity. At the end of the day you are a rushee, not a brother, always remember that. Brothers in my fraternity (which is big 4) would certainly take offense to a rushee coming in and acting like he's a part of our brotherhood. So in conclusion, do you research before rushing but don't take it too far as to offend brothers.

back to the op's question, having mutual friends with someone in a frat would definitely give you an advantage while rushing
