Panhel may not be on your side

by: truth

Just a reminder that Panhel's primary goal for recruitment is to encourage people to join A sorority. And often, this means "encouraging people" to go to less sought after houses through cuts. So, if you got dropped by a house you liked, don't take it personally. It is probably the case, if you thought you had a good convo, that they DID like you. Panhel simply has a system that often forces cuts so that girls who aren't at the absolute top of a chapter's list won't get asked back, in the hopes that they'll instead settle for a house that is traditionally less successful in recruiting

Kind of but not exactly. Panhel makes the strong recruiting chapters make deeper cuts because they have higher retention rates (most of the PNM’s they want have also ranked them high) - if Panhel didn’t make them cut more each round, then a lot more PNM’s would end up with no bid at the end of rush and it would actually waste the PNM’s time (and a slot on their pref card if it went that far) and give them false hope.

I wouldn’t say Panhel is not on the PNM’s side, but I get why it can feel that way. I could see an argument for saving the deeper cuts for later rounds, but they have to be done eventually and the longer you wait the greater the chance that PNMs will end up with no house. It’s not that they intentionally want girls to “settle” but yes they do want to match as many girls as possible to houses.

Agreed that getting cut does not mean a house didn’t like you - they have to cut based on the numbers. I think houses that bid promise make this problem worse (their goal is to get as many girls as they can to rank them #1 so their stats will look better/more top tier)

They literally try to artificially inflate lower houses' recruitment numbers through forcing top houses to make huge cuts early on. It's a well known practice

You can call it artificial if you want but it’s logical - if 100% of the girls a house invites back also want that house, then there’s no point inviting back twice as many girls as they need. If a house usually only gets 50% of the girls back that they want, then they should invite 2x as many in order to reach quota - it’s common sense.

A “top” house by definition can be more selective. No one is taking away a bid from any PNM that a house wanted enough to put on their first bid list etc.

It does suck that cuts are so deep right away when you barely get to talk to people. Rush is definitely not perfect or fair in a lot of ways.
