formal recuritment as a junior
by: PNM (maybe?)Is it inconceivable to get a bid as a junior? I feel like I now know more people in all of the sororities and am close with several. I went through last fall for the first time, so I don't have crazy high expectations regarding receiving a bid. I don't expect any top or upper-middle houses to be interested in me. I just think I''m missing out on something at carolina that I was hoping to get at Carolina

You definitely will receive a bid but it will probably be to a lower tier house such as Kappa or Sigma. But honestly, if you have really good friend connections with some higher tier houses don't count yourself out of any house. Just go through recruitment with an open mind and use the connections you have as an advantage!

So I don't want to discourage you from going through rush because I think sororities offer great experiences and opportunities to their members, but you'll most likely have a harder time fitting in once you receive a bid and join. My sorority MAYBE takes one junior each year, but those juniors are usually transfers from other schools and brand new to UNC. Once you join you're usually closest to your pledge class rather than people in the same academic year as you. Yes there are exceptions if you already know members, but most most of your time is initially spent with members of your pledge class in new member retreats, new member education, etc. Also you may have difficulty finding a big because girls typically want their little to be younger and may not be interested in taking a junior as a little.
Of course these are just examples of what I've observed in my chapter, but others may have different experiences. Joining a sorority is a big time and financial commitment, so please be aware of the potential issues you may face as a junior. And even though you may think you're missing out on something, joining a sorority may not exactly live up to your expectations and fulfill that missing piece.
I honestly hopes this information helps and isn't too discouraging!

I'm in Pi Phi and we don't really take juniors...Also, I really don't think APhi will take juniors either. I have a lot of friends in there and they have a huge junior class since they got a decent amount of freshmen when they colonized and then took a good amount of sophomores last year.
Your best bet is to talk openly with the girls you are close with who are in sororities. The information above isn't accurate at all but you should be able to get help from your friends. The second comment is the most accurate.
