what determines a top sorority at unc..

by: Confused..

At other schools, I can understand the top sororities...but here, I must say I am confused. If it is on looks alone, DDD, KD, and XO probably shouldn't be at the top, really not trying to be mean but their members are nothing special in the looks department, and some of their pledges were especially surprising. If it is in terms of competitiveness, I totally understand why they are the top considering the fact they are very hard to get into.. If it is in terms of academics, wouldn't it be AXO then XO? I honestly am genuinely confused seeing these rankings because they seem to be very misleading of the reality of the situation. Wondering what classifies a "top" sorority. Perhaps it is just because UNC is a far more academic school than others where greek life is common.

I'm SO glad someone asked this question (and worded it so well!) as I've been trying to figure this out as well....makes no sense??

Mostly money, connections, what school you went to, alumni donating money, how long the house has been established. I agree though. Most top houses are a definite mix of girls with money/connections (regardless of looks), and cute girls. The top houses usually try to find a balance between family connections and looks. You may think other schools don't operate like this, but plenty of other schools have top houses that are highly based on connections. Maybe not as much as it is here, but it still happens at other schools.

It is a mystery! And it's always so locked! It's like there is nothing that can happen to move a sorority up or down. It's really kind of silly!

It 100% has to do with how exclusive the sorority is. the "top" ones are the ones that you have to have connections with to be in (or otherwise be like model level pretty or famous or something).

It's kind of ironic because the houses who are accepting and forgiving and genuine during recruitment and don't do dirty rushing end up as the "bottom" sororities. The girls who join those usually end up being some of the more down to earth ones because they're in the sorority despite it not being "popular", which means they're there for sisterhood and not status.

But yeah that's why people hate this site- it perpetuates the exclusivity which reinforces the random tiers. If next year PBP had a reputation for being the "best" and the PNMs all thought that going in to rush, they'd probably get first pick and end up with a much "better" pledge class than normal after having first pick of the girls.

If it makes you feel any better, those of us actually in sororities don't care about tiers really. I have tons of friends from all of the houses. It's not about the house, it's about the girl. We know OF the tiers bc we all went through rush- but I don't think they mean anything like I used to before I joined

Excellent points! It is kind of funny how this site explodes when someone suggests that a "lower" house should be higher or that a "higher" house is losing its luster. People get locked and loaded and reinforce the tier system which in reality has nothing to do with quality of the sisterhood. Enjoy your houses girls; there are great people in all of them. There is no need to worry about where the other ones are on the pecking order. Your value as a person has nothing to do with what sorority you are in.
