does chi o pick out their pledge class before rush
by: pnmI have 2 recommendation letters but don't know if I should rush at all because I heard stories of how some sororities have their pledge class picked out already. Is ChiO like this? Do you have to know a lot of people to get in? I don't want to rush if I don't have a good chance because if I don't get in, it'll be really disappointing to the women who wrote me the recs.

What she said. Alumnae know very well that there are no guarantees during recruitment. The recs they wrote for you come with their best hopes but with no strings attached - you are not bound to join any house to meet someone else's expectations, and they will get over any disappointment about it. Repeat that to yourself. Find YOUR best fit and be a happy, proud, contributing member of your house.

I was a legacy at chi o and had a former president write me a recommendation. I'm blonde and thin. I had a stellar high school GPA. I didn't think there was any reason why I should have gotten cut. I went into rush thinking chi o was the only house for me, because I had been told by alumnae that it was the house for me. There are no guarantees. I have a friend who was a double legacy at KD, had a rec letter, and still got cut. It happens at every house. At the end of the day, I am in a sorority that I love now and I definitely would not have gotten along with the girls in the new chi o pledge class after recruitment. They were nice enough girls, but they were definitely not "me". Rec letters mean almost nothing at the end of the day at most houses. It's just the truth. I don't mean to sound harsh, but if you have your heart only set on chi o, you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. Or worse, you get a bid and realize the girls around you are not who you fit in with or feel happy around. This applies to every other pnm who has their heart set on one house. Unless you literally have an active older sister in a house and went to school with 30 of the girls in that house, do not go into recruitment wanting that house and only that house. Even then, things happen and girls get cut from houses they didn't think they'd get cut from. You should be considering every single house until you see for yourself what the girls are like. It's true. They tiptoe around "dirty rushing" over the summer and suddenly a lot of the girls they want will have a huge number of insta followers that are in those houses. Sisters also make posters with their pictures and their "bio" so their faces will be familiar. It's not an even playing field and it hasn't been for years. How else do you think all of the girls from Westminster in Atlanta wound up in KD? They were OOS.

some of the sororities do this- I can't be sure whether or not chi o does in particular- but no sorority has their entire pledge class picked out ahead of time. I would encourage you to open you mind to the other sororities- they are all wonderful. Very very very few people end up in the house that they initially wanted unless they know someone on the inside, but once you give the sorority you ended up in a chance, you'll probably love it (and you can always drop it if you don't)

^agreed, no house- has their pledge class picked out completely over the summer. There are girls coming in from all over and yeah girls from certain areas/high schools might all end up at one house but that is often because they already had friends/connections in that house and so they feel comfortable there

The women recommending you should understand that recruitment is competitive, and that it's a chance to find the sorority that is the best fit for YOU. Just because they were in a specific sorority, doesn't mean it is the right one for you. During rush you may even realize that you like a particular house more than Chi O, so you shouldn't let their recommendations or experiences pigeon hole you into only one sorority. And unless these women are alums of UNC's chapter or national officers, the recommendations might not even hold much weight for Chi O.
My last piece of advice is to go through rush with an open mind and trust the system. I dropped out of rush my freshman year because my favorite house cut me. I re-rushed the next year because I severely regretted my decision and am happy to say that I found a house that I fell in love with, even though it was not one of my favorites when I went through rush the first time.
