panhellenic rush

by:

I live in a city out of state where there is one huge SEC state school everyone goes to. My mom was super active in her sorority there, and through her friends and girls rushing in the past few years, recruitment seems to be pretty intense. Everyone has beautiful resumes, and letters of rec for every house. There are like 1400 girls going through rush, and the bigger and "better" sororities have 130 in a pledge class, with them cutting 70% in the first round. Girls come up a week early in August and rush freshman year. I was wondering if recruitment at UNC is anything like this? Thanks.

No, it's nothing like that. For one Rush doesn't start until after classes start, and the houses are smaller (most Sororities at UNC have 160 - 190 girls total) and the pledge classes are more like 60, not 130.

To get into the top 3 - 4 houses at UNC you do need to have connections (preferably more than 1), or be really hot. If you don't have connections and are more of a plain-Jane there are plenty of good houses that will take you, and the bottom houses will take almost anyone that doesn't have an attitude problem.

Literally rushing out of state sucks unless you are a legacy, really hot and/or really smart. If you have all three of those you can get into the top three or four. If not expect to be somewhere in the middle and you will for sure get a bid from the bottom.

This is the most accurate statement ever. Wait a year as an out of state. Otherwise you just get stuck at the bottom. Not that those aren't some good girls, just you really don't necessarily end up where you belong or fit. Even being a legacy doesn't matter unless it's from a NC school

I hate the "really hot" answers. UNC isn't as shallow as that.

This is silly! The answer is, yes, out if state students can find a great home during rush. I suggest you get to know the girls and find out for yourself which sorority welcomes you the most and which sororities fit you. Please ignore the tier thing. It is so silly. There are some really wonderful girls in all the sororities. The stereotypes do more harm than good. The pledge classes shift from year to year. Certain greek letters don't make you "hot" or "not" .
