R.I.P. GREEK LIFE

by:

To my fellow Greek Brothers and Sisters......

Today, it was announced that Bloomsburg University has terminated their fraternity and sorority programs effective immediately. The University has cut ties with all national and local fraternities and sororities.

Back at the beginning of the spring term, the University put out a statement stating that due to the plethora of risk management issues, students injured and deaths and hazing, that they were giving Greek Life organizations one last opportunity to get their stuff together. They stated that if any fraternity or sorority broke rules (Hazing, risk management, etc,) and were found responsible, the entire Greek System would be shut down.

Unfortunately this past weekend, a member of Phi Sigma Sigma sorority passed away after falling down steps at a suspended fraternity's party, and today it was announced Greek Life is over at Bloomsburg.

Well it was fun while it lasted. Now with the removal of Greek Life and the school being part of the Northern Region merger, I thinks it time to transfer out. I hear Greek Life at Colleges/Universities in the south are doing very well.

The Schools in the South (ACC & SEC) have very strong Greek Life and very loyal Alumni that are totally involved with the Greek Community.

While schools in the South (ACC &SEC) have strong Greek Life, be prepared to pay anywhere from 10 to 30 times what you paid in dues at Bloomsburg. Also, Greek Life in the south is in no way comparable to Greek Life at Bloomsburg. It's competitive - VERY competitive - and if you don't know people at that school, your chances of joining a top tier house are close to zero.

The above link is the recent article regarding the termination of Greek Life.

Bloomsburg University said Thursday it is immediately terminating its fraternity and sorority program and severing ties with all national and local Greek life organizations affiliated with the school.

It’s unclear to what extent any of Bloomsburg’s current 17 sororities and fraternities, some of which are on probation, could continue to operate.

The school announced the change to the campus in a two-sentence statement that lacked any context or explanation: “Effective immediately, Bloomsburg University is terminating its fraternity and sorority life (FSL) program and severing ties with all national and local FSL organizations currently affiliated with the University. All students are reminded that their conduct remains subject to all applicable University policies, including: PRP 4802 — Student Code of Conduct and Judicial Process.”

The message came days after Leah Burke, a sophomore nursing major from Lackawanna County, died at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. BUnow, a student news site, reported that Burke died after an incident on the outdoor stairs of a fraternity house. Montour County Coroner Scott E. Lynn said in an email to The Inquirer that Burke’s death “is not considered suspicious nor was it trauma related, and nothing nefarious was involved. We are looking at a potential undiagnosed medical condition which requires further testing.”

Bloomsburg spokesperson Tom McGuire said there is no relationship between her death and the school’s decision on Greek life. He said the university is conducting an internal investigation into her death.

Asked why the university is cutting ties with its Greek system, McGuire said, “That’s a university administrative decision at this point” and declined to elaborate.

The university has had continuing problems with its Greek life system. In January, it severed ties with three Greek organizations because of ongoing violations. In February, the mother of an 18-year-old Bloomsburg freshman from Montgomery County who died in 2019 after attending a fraternity rush party sued the fraternity, a sorority that hosted the event, and 36 of their members. The suit alleges that they plied her son with liquor as part of an initiation process.

Justin P. King, of Gilbertsville, fell down an embankment after attending the event and was found the next morning. Police did not file charges in the case, and the Columbia County coroner had ruled the death accidental. Bloomsburg is not named in the suit. The university initiated a crackdown on Greek life several months after King’s death, though it said the changes had already been in the works. The university at that time instituted new rules and placed all fraternity and sorority chapters on probation through the spring 2021 semester.

This really bites. I hope all Greek Alumni from this school don't donate not one penny. Let this school suffer financially and I hope every administrator loses their job.

We go independent like several other greek systems. Believe me, our nationals cant afford to lose our chapters. Lets contact Fraternity Forward Coalition

Many nationals do not like independent councils because that means that every IHQ will have the added responsibility to monitor those chapters more closely for risk management without the school's assistance. Some IHG may not have the staff to devote time into this unless every fraternity and sorority recruits at least one alumnus/ alumnae to assist with oversight.

If your national wants to have a chapter on a campus, they should be willing to provide the support and monitoring necessary to ensure the safety of students. No national fraternity or sorority should be leaving chapters out there on their own. National organizations understand that they will incur the liability of the chapter, regardless of if they are providing support or not, and as such, will elect to do so. And sadly, ever chapter should have alumni volunteers to advise them on GOOD practices in Greek Life. This isn't new. It's been around for many years.

Nationals don't like having "ROGUE" Chapters. There is no oversight without University recognition and it becomes hard to monitor those chapters, which means they have to actively recruit more local Alumni to assist.

the shutdown has nothing to do with phi sig. Leah passed from a ruptured aorta…it was a complete freak accident and she would have passed away anywhere that she was that night. unfortunately, we had the school and people like you who are blaming phi sig for her death when it was unpreventable. greek life was targeted and shut down solely because Leah was affiliated with a greek org…despite the fact that her death was not related to one and was simply a freak accident. she was a ticking timebomb…
