importance of knowing someone prior to recruitment

I read earlier that you dont get into top/middle tier houses without knowing someone. How valid is this? There are two houses im interested in so far but they both seem at least middle tier maybe top tier I can't tell. Do I have much chance of even getting in without knowing anyone yet?

there are 20 chapters at u of I, just because you know someone in a couple housed doesn't mean you should disregard the other chapters going into recruitment. You also DEFINITELY should get off this sits and stop worrying about ranking.

There is still time to get in shape and get nice clothes. Then when you arrive, just be yourself and be positive and friendly. You will do fine.
