Why do top/middle houses keep their need for informal recruitment a secret?

It hurts their reputation if recruitment didn’t go well. I’m also assuming they want to control who is considered for open spots.

It's not really based on secrecy. They just don't openly advertise it. They tend to look for people that girls in the house know/are friends with so they already (kinda) know what that person is like. Rather than inviting everyone and anyone. (and tbh if top-ish houses openly advertised their events, sooo many people would show up)
