sorority recruitment
by: ConfusedHow did Panhellenic fail so badly this year? Sooo many girls dropped and numbers are low.

This isn’t just a U of I concern. College admission numbers are down nationwide. All the negative publicity regarding Greek life hasn’t helped.
And, honestly, social media (like this site) skew perceptions of what house is “good or bad” and girls go in with crazy ideas of who is “acceptable or top-tier” and when they don’t get those back, they drop.
It’s sad and, sadly, we’ve done it to ourselves...

There are all kinds of greek systems around the country...honestly the problem at UIUC is that there are too many houses. Smaller PCs have better retention and the women are closer. A lot of my friends go to schools with smaller greek lives (20-40 per pledge class) and are having great experiences. Here it's just toxic and over competitive...if number go down, the good houses will last through it; numbers have gone up and down before

Illinois had particular challenges this year though. There were only 900-ish girls that pledged. That’s down from 1300 2 years ago. When they did call backs they had to apply the ratios to a lot lower percentage of girls. But you’re right when these Girls who would normally have gotten a lot of their top choices got their sheets back and only got their bottom choices they dropped. That caused the numbers to crash more. So you are going from a quota of 60 a few years ago to 40 this year. That makes it a lot harder to get into a house if you are a middle tier pnm ( no legacy, activities, grades whatever). And before anyone starts blaming the pledges for being too picky that is not at all what is going on here. The people that are on here calling the pledges too picky are the people who got their top choice house or close to it. I’m talking these girls were getting their bottom choices. Choices they ranked last. And I don’t care if that choice was a top house or a bottom house. It was still last on their list. To blame them for not taking that is ridiculous. I’m not even sure PHC could’ve done anything about this. Their job is to equally allocate the pledges so that houses don’t get left with nothing and top houses get everyone. It was a perfect storm of Bad things. But Greek life can’t survive with 40 girls in a house. The costs are too high. So something has to change.
