Acacia Fraternity at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign - UIUC 3.4 Let me tell you a story once upon a time about Acacia. It was 1989, Vanilla Ice was on the radio, and Acacia was the top house on campus. But they were not where they are now, they were at 501 E. Daniel just down the street from Kams. In 1985 their old house burned down in that same spot (whispers of Arson) and a new modern mansion was built in the same place ( 501 E. Daniels) and opened in 1987. The house was state of the art. Looked like a millionares home in Lake Forest or Barrington Hills. It still stands there today. The inside had modern rooms, lighting, pool tables, new entertainment systems and a lot of the upperclassmen rooms had hottubs and waterbeds. Porsche Turbos in the parking lot and a lot of GQ facemen in the house. Acacia was IT. Imagine the most popular guy in your high school, the most captainy of the football team I got a new car in the parkinglot dating all the cheerleaders kind of guy. Now imagine an entire house full of these guys. House ski trips to Aspen in Winter. Get it? A whole lot of attitude..half the house didn't get along with the other half. Too many type As. These were the guys that went on to be congressmen and CEOs. Everyone wanted in: they football blocked with AXOs and DGs. They had all the expensive parties, and the hottest women. They had money and a high social profile on campus. (top houses were Pikes, ATOs and Acacia) But then the bills were coming due for the new mansion/house construction. The chapter assumed that the alumni would help out, but when the alumni would visit, they found the house full of self important jerks and they didn't get along with them, so they didn't pay anything. It was in 89-90 that a group of upperclassmen in the house got the idea to start growing weed in the attic of the house (illegal in 1990). There was a huge bust and the Daily Illini covered the story along with local news teams of the cops carrying out garbage bags full of weed out of the house and a few guys getting led off in cuffs. Then things happened pretty quick...the bills came due and they lost their house in the early 90s. The University of Illinois stepped in and purchased the house and is now University Property, some kind of extension of their library system. When they moved in, they gutted the inside and had to remove some hottubs. Things never really came back to the way things once were for this house, and over the next 30 years they have rented houses in different spots on campus and have been on campus off and on. I hear in 2016 they raised the money for thier new current house at their current location. So whats the moral of this story? Dont be a jerkoff
