get rec letters, they are important for the top 3 houses and recommended for the rest

You need recs for DZ zeta and ADPI. I didn't have recs for chi o or axid and they still wanted me until I cut them

It's not as competitive here, but that doesn't mean they're not important. It looks good if you have them, it makes you look like you've done your research.

To answer your question, no you don't absolutely need them. But they do help, and it really doesn't take that much time and effort to get them.
