Rerushing in the fall
by: helloHi, I'm a freshmen at smu and want to rerush in the fall. I wanted to know how I can get on certain sororities' radar and be "dirty rushed" by them before the next recruitment starts? I've had a difficult time finding my people due to rush being moved up to the fall and really want to be part of greek life. I have a few sororities in mind that I think I'd fit in, but how do I meet these sorority girls and let them know that I want to join their sorority? Please share any advice or your experience with being rushed by sororities before formal recruitment started!

Tbh I’d manage your expectations. Re-rushing almost never turns out any better than the first time. Especially if you dropped out bc you thought your choices weren’t good enough. The houses will remember and it will be hard to overcome. SMU sororities do not have set aside spots for non freshmen. Financially, the houses want girls that will be paying dues for four years, not three.
Best of luck but be open to the houses that liked you back the first time.

Tonight 😞 the newly sHoCkEd GDI must call her parents with the bad news. After her parents paid $50 grand for another SMU semester, she has to tell them about being cut from the sorority/s she wanted to join. This is after during the holidays, telling them about how these top sororities expressed great interest in her.
Her mom 🤦🏻♀️ did not tell her about the numerous weekends she had to donate, her time, labor and contributions to various causes to secure the numerous RECs required for SMU recruitment. Her mom still has 4-5 more weekends of commitments to these "legacy moms" for their RECs. A great emotional and financial los$ to this GDI and her family.
Being a GDI/Geed social outcast in such a Greek life socially dominated exorbitantly expensive university is impossible to validate. 🥺

SMU GDI Crisis Office 😵
There is a large number of newly ShOcKeD GDIs in our dormitory this week. Several hundred of us. We are sHoCkEd, angry, depressed and resentful to the university and especially panHELLenic. 😨
Given it's long history for deceiving young freshmen PNM girls, the university and panHELLenic 👿 should immediately open a Newly ShOcKeD GDI Crisis Office to assist these emotionally harmed girls. 🛏

A redo of formal recruitment is not going to go any better for you at chapters that released you the first time. There is no upperclassmen quota and freshmen will get the spots. Reset your expectations and be more open minded to ALL the chapters, there are beautiful sweet fun girls in all of them.
- You could get a bid now through COB. Continuous Open Bidding means any chapter that is under the established membership total for sororities can offer some bids to get up to that number. You need to contact panhellenic to see which chapters are open to COB and you can reach out to the membership chair or president to tell them you are interested. Certain sororities already know who they want to COB, if any at all, so you need to be open minded.
- If you don't know how to meet sorority members and befriend them already from your classes, your dorm, friends who have sorority friends, fraternity guys who always know sorority girls, then we don't know what to tell you.
- A word about "Dirty Rushing". Well it's not dirty, it's just what disgruntled pnm's say. You need to understand that certain sororities and fraternities already know many of the incoming freshmen, or know of them, through having active members that went to certain high schools, both in state and all around. Of course they are going to prefer people they already know and went to school with, or the ones their friends went to school with. There's nothing dirty about it. People get pi$$ed about it when it gives others an edge over them for a bid, but that's the way it is. Fall recruitment cuts down on the extent of actual "dirty rushing". Finally.

why do pnms have to know a ton of girls before rush? Isn’t the point of joining a sorority is to make friends? Most schools I know don’t rush girls before actual rush starts, usually they first meet the girls when rush starts.

Now that rush is happening in fall (like most other schools) instead of a semester into it, there will not be the fall semester pre-rushing. All good for everyone.
But SMU is still very insular. Almost 1/2 of SMU freshmen are from Texas. You can't 'unknow' someone you went to school with, or church or summer camp with, or who is your parents' friends' daughter. The older girls from any Texas high school are in sororities here and know these girls from high school or home town or at least who they are before they get on campus. Most of the rest come from certain places in Cali, major cities in Southern states, and a couple of midwest cities with the same result, there are sorority members from the same places and schools who already know the girls coming in. That is how it is here.
Sorority members are going to pull the girls they know over the ones they don't. Sororities are social organizations and membership selection is based on that. Nothing wrong with wanting your friends with you.
There is also nothing wrong with someone who isn't connected. Your resume is still good, you are still beautiful and accomplished, no one's saying you aren't or that you are less than or not worthy if you don't get into certain chapters. Please get over this. There are gorgeous smart amazing girls who come here with no connections and don't get certain houses because they are unknowns. Not everything is PKT (oops no 'T' at the moment). They go to other houses: AXO and DG are gorgeous and have homecoming queens and super involved campus leaders with honestly the best sisterhoods on campus, XO and DDD are gorgeous and have stellar academics. And ADPi is new but a solid choice with a known sorority 'brand' that is strong in the South and is going to attract quality pnm's.
Open your mind and get a bid. All houses here are good.

I thought there was a quota for sophomores? I feel like I didn’t get the chance to make myself known and be on the sororities’ radar. I think it didn’t work out for me because they just didn’t know me and I prob didn’t have anyone pulling for me. Also I feel like a lot of freshmen will rerush in the fall since it was so crazy this year.
