New Sorority on campus

by:

So word on the street is either Alpha Delta Pi or Alpha Phi will be joining campus next year and will have recruitment after formal recruitment concludes. I hope the new chapter can have an amazing founding class and help grow the community.

Losing LXA, KA, Sig Ep, Pike, Theta, now GPB and almost the Fijis, it has been a bad period for Greek Row. Let's turn this downward trend around by focusing on these 3 projects this summer. 😎

1. 💑 Consider using/renting the Theta Chapter house for those sororities than can/do not want to host afternoon mixers at their Chapter house. The Theta house has a beautiful courtyard with an attached kitchen and dining area.

2. 🏛 All agree the Sigma Chi temporary front door porch facade does not match their large house or our beautiful Georgian style campus. A simple 3-month construction project this academic year would be the best time to complete this necessary project.

3. 💲 All Greek chapters were shocked to see how one rogue Fiji Chapter Treasurer could financially dissolve its future. Greek Chapters should transition away from a "single Treasurer" to a "Financial Oversight Committee" for all purchases totaling over $50.

Let's get mov'n! 🚀

4. 😱 Require the university to read and hand-out the past 5 years Panhellenic disappointing recruitment results to the incoming PNM Freshmen class at their Fall semester recruitment orientation meeting. This will set expectations to these 1,000 PNMs of the potential 300-400 sorority quota limited bid opportunities.

🗣 Call, text, IM, snap your Chapter officers with these positive constructive ideas.

😮 If your Chapter officers are pushing back on these ideas, replace them! Hold recall Chapter officer elections in this Fall semester.

Let's get mov'n! 🚀

I wish them well. I just don't see how they will get girls to break away from the "PKT mentality" (even though Theta is gone, you get the idea). Too many girls quit recruitment each year because they did not get into a top house. This is because that is all thry hear first semester before recruitment.

In terms of rep Alpha Phi is very strong all over, and with a lot of Cali girls coming to the school, they could succeed easily. And Alpha Delta Pi, while it was hear ages ago, has strong chapters at other schools in Texas and a huge alumni base down here. It could work.

And as mentioned, Theta could be returning soon too.

Alpha Delta Pi, ADP.
Better known as "After Dinner Pigs" 🐃.

Lets try for Kappa Delta, KD.
Southern founded sorority with solid southern roots.

I think your geography needs work...ADPi was founded in Macon, Georgia so I think that is more southern than KD in Farmville, Virginia! ADPi has very strong southern roots and chapters!

I'm guessing all of the negative talk on this site hasn't helped any groups who are on campus...let's try to support each other, rather than cut each other down!

The 'after dinner pigs" comment is exactly why so many houses have had to close recently. If hateful posters would ease up, the entire greek system would improve

And the refusal of certain “top” tier chapters to mix with more than one or two others brings the whole system down as well. If everyone mixes, the entire Greek system improves.

Alpha Phi may be the best choice, but they will bulldoze right over AXO and DG. Nationally they recruit solely based on looks which creates lots of mean girl vibes and poor retention. Should fit right in.

Yep, I concur that the APhi "Looks First!" recruitment would be a great fit with the vacuous, instagram-obsessed culture that is SMU. The fact that the APhi chapters (at schools where I have friends from high school) usually are less than stellar academically makes them an even better fit for SMU. Clearly their national sorority has a strong recent tradition of recruiting good-looking dullards. They will clearly have fertile ground at SMU.

They also had a string of successful new chapters (Baylor, UGA, Ole Miss) so they might do well. And they can pull girls from Baylor, TTU, and UT to help with their founding class.

My, my, my…bless your heart.

How quickly the claws come out when the toxic cesspool of a Panhellenic “community” is threatened by new groups.

Why would anyone accept an invitation to colonize with Bitter Betties like those here unleashing their vitriol on potential chapter groups and their new members…whom you don’t.even.know.

Sounds like someone feels threatened.

By: Oh, dear
by: Lol

The claws do not get a chance to retract around here…people just stay attacking each other.

Hopefully the new organization, whomever is chosen, will be successful. This Greek community could use some unity.

I think ADPi is more likely to join, they actually have a physical house already (the Panhel house used to be ADPi)

ZTA also still owns their house. I'd think they'd wanna come back at some point too.

NPC reached out to ZTA earlier this past summer, and Zeta declined the offer to apply to the Panhellenic Council and return to SMU. Zeta's National Council stated they "remain focused on having the best interest of the Fraternity at heart and must consider all factors". Due to the current campus social environment not being conducive to a safe social or new member experience and knowing the house they own on campus would need a full rebuild, Zeta is working with the university to sell the house they own, and "National Council strongly believes this is not the best time for ZTA to return to SMU".

Zeta is a strong national sorority with an alum base in Texas and name recognition here…and they’re basically saying…yeah, no thanks. SMU Greek Life needs to get its you know what together…outside of those issues, SMU is otherwise a great school and many NPCs would be submitting packets to colonize. Similar schools are opening for expansion and getting 10, 15 packets, but at SMU, groups are declining.

It’s not them, it’s SMU.

I am surprised ZTA is not in the running. They are very strong at other Texas schools.

By: No Zeta?

Zeta is indeed strong in Texas and nationally, which is why they have no intentions to return any time soon.

On one hand, any sorority is either gutsy or crazy to try to come on here with the toxic and misogynistic sorority mentally that exists. On the other hand, there will not be a better time with both Theta and GPhi gone. If panhellenic would move rush to August, like normal schools have, it would be better for every sorority and offer a better new member experience across the board. Pnm's need to look beyond the letters and look at the members and their accomplishments as well as the sisterhoods, and join for those reasons instead. The PKT or die attitude is ridiculous and no one cares. Or I guess PK now, good riddance.

Good analysis. I think it is going to be risky for any new sorority to try to come on campus at SMU. A lot of people have mentioned the toxic Greek culture here at SMU. It is real. But you mentioned one possible change that could cut back on that:

First semester recruitment.

It is impossible for freshmen (and transfer students) not to get completely caught up in the SMU status heirarchy if they are on campus for a semester before recruitment and have guys at parties tell them you HAVE to be in one of 2 or 3 houses to have any social life. What is even worse are the "coffee dates" with active members and PNM's first semester before recruitment starts. A lot of girls in my dorm started feeling desperate when they saw some girls from our floor constantly going on those excursions (and CONSTANTLY talking about it).
I knew several girls going through last spring from connections back home (I am not from Texas - disclaimer). One girl (friend of my younger brother who was visiting) told me over pizza (unsolicited) that she was only "going for" Pi Phi and Kappa. She caught herslf and said the girls in my house seemed great, but she was not really "religious." (Guess my house. Btw: I consider myself a spiritual person, but not a "bible thumper") She got cut by Pi Phi and Kappa and dropped recruitment. I don't think that is too unusual, unfortunately.
Through in stuff like Theta having parties with PNM's BEFORE bid opening on bid day, and it shows something is wrong with our Greek Culture.

A new house is going to have a lot to overcome.

We don't need frat boys inserting themselves into sorority recruitment, we don't need sororities preselecting their new members over fall semester, we don't need girls dropping recruitment because they think there are only two worthwhile sororities. What we do need is to support each other to have a better experience for all.

While ZTA does have a solid reputation in the state of Texas, I am not surprised at all that they chose not to re-colonize at SMU.

Looking at their current collegiate chapter listing nationwide, ZTA really has not been very active in starting (or re-starting) new chapters. Plus many of there chapters are smaller, less well known schools.

It takes a ton of cash, a very experienced extension team, many trained volunteers and nationals staff, solid local alumnae support, plus loads of guts (courage, confidence, bravado, plus a touch of insanity) to accept an invitation, present, accept, and colonize a chapter. Plus time…lots of time…hours and hours, months and months, 1-2 years. So much work goes into it before a group ever steps on campus.

I heard that one of the Panhellenic houses (not sure if PH1 or PH2) has asbestos, but either one (old ADPi House or old ZTA House) will require mucho bucks to bring to code, remodel for 2023 living, and redecorate—-all the be competitive with other groups on campus.

In a way I would like both group to colonize to really shake things up. We shall see. It will be a fascinating year between now and next fall to see what unfolds.

Wouldn't it make sense for the new group to lease the Gamma Phi house?

This is so sad. Until the "ranking" mentality ends ... which it never will ... it will be difficult for any new sorority. I'm sad for the Gamma Phis, as it was their home, no matter what anyone else has to say. Until we stop being rude and judgmental, this will continue.
