Rip off the bandaid

by: 7 > 8

7 strong houses is better than 8 when there is 1 house that creates a lower quota for all the others (bc the house is used when calculating quota, even though 40-50 girls refuse their bid on bid day.

We’d have a lot less PNMs dropping & everyone’s chances of getting matched w a good fit would increase.

Thoughts???

We are all stunned 😨 the university risks losing almost 300 freshmen girls each calendar year to GDI shock.

Looking back, panHELLenic is to blame for not being "more forthcoming" about the limited true openings for the top 6 legacy-saturated sororities to 850 unknowing PNMs. 😖

The university is to blame for scheduling recruitment to entrap 300 girls for 2 exorbitantly expensive semesters. Then both dropping us with limited social events or activities for the captured Spring semester. 😧

If the only reason you came to SMU was to pledge a specific sorority that’s on you not SMU or Pan. How could you not know the odds prior to enrolling? Has google and the entire internet blocked you from doing a few simple searches?

panHELLenic 👿 EVIL, knows, knew and still lead-on 850 unknowing freshmen PNMs to their harsh rigged elimination recruitment. 😱

The sad thing is there’s LITERALLY nothing different about them than the rest of us other than what y’all have to say about them. Y’all are so committed to believing in your ranks that you don’t realize how ridiculous they are.

And before you go all OkAy [insert srat name here], I’m a senior in a house you probably didn’t get to day 2 in, so calm down. I’m just not into condemning a whole house just because this campus decided they’re bottom tier when they’re no different than the other bottom and middle tier houses.

I’m sorry to say this, but your comment just isn’t true. Girls in G Phi were literally rude during recruitment or very socially awkward. Not all of them, but way too many, & IMO, that’s why there’s a persistent problem

This is true: if you remove the bottom group/campus targets from a school, somebody else will become the new victims. Always.

What’s really sad is it would take like three pledge classes of girls willing to join and turn things around to make it indistinguishable from the rest of the houses. It doesn’t have to be this way, it’s totally self inflicted.

This site in no way represents real life. People get on here and say nasty things to make themselves feel better. Just because a few people post something bad on here doesn't mean a house is 'struggling.'

With the culture at SMU, losing GPhi will just result in AXO or DG becoming the "stigma" house and failing to meet quota.

It might be better to try to bring back Zeta or ADPi (both were previously at SMU), but probably unlikely their nationals would want to take the risk.

If making quota and growing their membership is a problem for some houses, SMU panhellenic needs to implement Variable Quota for two or three years. This requires harsher cuts and fewer bids for some houses while allowing more invitations and bids to others. It has worked successfully at other schools to level the playing field, grow smaller chapters, and remove stigmas that are artificial anyway.

It could but at some schools, the PNMs knew exactly who had larger quotas and they then did not want to pledge those groups. They wanted to be in groups that had the small and exclusive quotas.

This wouldn’t work here. We’re dealing w a house that got less than 10 pledges.
85% turned down bids. Giving out more bids wouldn’t help

One of the things that happens during variable quota is that upperclassmen pick up the slack to join the houses that freshmen are prone to drop. They realize 1) their chances are not strong at all to get a bid during formal recruitment or cob at certain houses; 2) they start to see that the other options are actually pretty good houses after all when they have been on campus for a year and get over the typical freshman 'ranks' mindset; 3) they are actually welcomed and appreciated in these houses and see the advantages of joining. And this is not just sophs but juniors as well, and there are plenty of gorgeous, social, accomplished upperclassmen who fall through the cracks every year in recruitment because of certain sororities' exclusivity or the pnm's own narrow mindset, who would be stunning additions to chapters. When they start filling the houses, people notice and perceptions on campus begin to change rather quickly.

@ change it, there’s nothing stopping this house from offering COBs to upperclassmen now. The problem is that people don’t accept/want the COBs or bids.
Adding more bid offers will just leave that many more refusals of bids.

There isn’t a lack of supply, there’s a lack of demand

VQ really only seems to boost middle houses. It allows struggling houses to say they made quota, but inevitably a big chunk of those NMs drop before initiation.

Notably, it didn't help Theta at Ole Miss. During their last recuitment, PNMs chose to drop out before pref if they only had Theta left or suicide if they had Theta and another house at pref. As a result, they missed their assigned quota by half and got shut down by their national for numbers.

If Gphi closes/disbands, who is going to get all the "bottom hate"? My bet is on DG.

AXO has sort od an alternative vibe. DG is either girls who got cut from XO at pref, or girls who think they are hot stuff because they got DG over Gphi at pref. Overall, total wannabe vibe. Lot of meh's in looks, too. If Gphi is out of the picture, bet they will fall quickly.
