Here's the truth

by: alumna

For all the women on this forum complaining how recruitment failed them when, in fact, they did get invited back to a house or offered bids but dropped because "they'd be miserable" or "there was no connection:" You probably met less than 10% of the entire chapter in each house during recruitment. From an alumna who had close friends in her sorority as well as friends in other sororities, it honestly doesn't matter which house you join because in every single house on this campus, there are at the very least a few girls who you would probably get along very well with personality-wise and could grow close to given the time and opportunities, and no matter what sorority you join, a few close friends is all you are probably going to have. By the end of my time in college I was rolling my eyes whenever we were pressured to talk about how close we were with every single one of our sisters because, in reality, that wasn't true. Most girls in my chapter (myself including) had small close friend groups of 3-5, and the rest of the girls in the chapter were just friendly acquaintances you'd see around sometimes at chapter or mixers and might wave to if you passed them on campus.
People complain about not making genuine connections with certain houses during recruitment, but the truth is that it's difficult to make genuine connections during recruitment because it's all fake. Each person you talk to at a house has already talked to dozens of other girls that day, and they are asking each one the exact same questions. Recruitment is 90% small talk. Some people are great at small talk, and some people aren't, but either way, that's not a valid measure for how you would connect with them in a more genuine setting and their potential to be a fun person and a good friend. Stop acting like this is such a terrible situation because you didn't get the first-choice house you wanted. A lot of girls did get invited back to certain houses and offered bids, but they dropped because they acted like it would have killed them to spend another minute with the girls who invited them back. And that's on the PNMs, not Panhellenic.

SMU Recruitment is designed by Panhellenic and the university as a "Bait & Switch" Entrapment for over 750 PNMs. Panhellenic painted us a picture during the Fall semester of the thriving social life of sororities 1-6. Saying how this lengthy, grueling 2 semester recruitment will be worth it by joining these elite privileged sororities.

In reality, sororities 1-6 are saturated in legacies. Less than 60 non-legacy girls in-total were given bids to these sororities. The university made over 750 pnms wait until late-January to get the recruitment results. This was after the 90% tuition & housing deadlines were in effect. Giving Newly Shocked GDIs just a few days until the 50% refund kicked-in. Essentially entrapping all of the Newly Shocked GDIs for the Spring semester.

Panhellenic as in years past, pushed COB to us knowing only sororities 7 & 8 were involved. This extra time pushed us past the 50% tuition & housing deadlines. We are trapped taking at least 6+ hours of courses this semester that will not transfer to most other universities.

Yep, our sorority Recruitment Committee had the list of 50 legacies listed we had to honor with bids by Halloween. Leaving the Chapter with about "10 outstanding bids to tease 700 PNMs".

Pref & Bid Day should happen the (weekend before Thanksgiving). All of the sororities are prepared to complete our recruitment efforts by then. After 5 recruitments, it is obvious the university wants to wait until mid-January to release our recruitment results to capture all of these Newly Shocked GDIs for the Spring semester.

Its all about Spring Tuition & Housing "FEE CAPTURE" for the university. We know about 300 PNMs would not return to the university if they received our recruitment results by Thanksgiving. A lousy thing to do to these 300 girls each year.

And do not listen to the person posting on this forum continuously as "Ole Salty" or whatever name she's using now. If you go back through older discussions on GR, you can see that she comes back and posts the exact same BS every year (with little changes in the wording), full of inaccuracies and highly exaggerated claims. She was posting all of this crap on these forums when I was a freshman and seems to have it out for two of the sororities on campus in particular, as she always makes nasty comments about both of them despite the fact that they are filled with kind and genuine women. The wording in her posts makes it extremely obvious it's the same person writing it over and over, yet she has assumed multiple identities in her posts, including pretending to be a member of "sororities 1-6" at SMU, a mom of a "newly shocked GDI," and a rejected PNM who has since transferred to UT Austin. Everyone has always made it very clear in the comments that they know she is a troll who likely is no longer a student at this school, but for some reason this year people seem to be overwhelmingly falling for it.

We the 250 newly shocked GDIs would like to schedule a meeting at an SMU on-campus conference room to express our grievances with PanHellenic and the university. First, please identify yourself so we address you formally. If not, stay-off GR with your entitled, EVIL, non-empathetic comments towards us.

How about you stay off Greekrank? You're a troll whose only purpose is to spread lies, misinformation, and hateful comments. How about you have some empathy for "sororities 7 and 8" who you have so hatefully berated over the years?

Non-legacies have a "very legitimate beef" with panHELLenic for not disclosing their limited opportunity to join the top 4 sororities. The past few years legacy versus non-legacy Recruitment results should be disclosed to them months in advance. Leading-on non-legacy PNMs about joining Greek Life in the top 4 sororities is "cruel and deceitful".
